'Even big girls need moms and dads'
Dear Family
Hi! Sorry it's been so long since I've written
but I have been so busy. Every committee I
signed up for at the beginning of the year met
this week. Then fhad this test that was so hard.
I didn't study for it I mean I couldn't. I had to
clean my room. By the way Mom I guess you
were right those old pop cans do attract
ants. Anyway about that test nobody I talked
to passed it except this one girl who doesn't do
anything but study. You know the type. Anyway
if I flunk this class I can retake it next semester
and wipe the "F" off my transcript. Dad I don't
know why you are pushing me to graduate in
four years. None of my friends will. And Mom
don't worry; there are plenty of speech and
theatre majors with jobs. Even if I can't find a
teaching job I will just waitress. It's better
money anyway.
Financially I'm okay I guess. I realize that
sometimes I will have to do without. I guess
you'll just have to settle for a birthday card
Dad. The car is doing great except they had to
overhaul the transmission. I hope it doesn't
cost more than $30 to fix because I will die if I
can't buy a new dress. I have absolutely
nothing to wear.
This weekend is Parents Day. I wish you
could be here with me. I see all these freshmen
eagerly showing their parents all different
aspects of their new life. Remember when I
dragged you from Behrens to meet my roomie
then to Moody Center to see my mailbox? I
must have Introduced you to a hundred people.
There wasn't a dull moment that weekend. It
was fun.
I agree with you Dad. I can't believe you have
a kid that's a senior In college. It seems such a
short time since when I was a freshman.
Remember the time I called you collect at
midnight just to talk? And the time I called to
tell you about that "awful" research paper that

didn't turn out quite so awful? I remember Mom
squealing with excitement when I told her a
bunch of guys liked me enough to call me
sweetheart. Dad said he knew 1 was sweet long
before now.
I guess it was your love for me that allowed
you to let me go so far away. You always tell me
it is tough letting go but you say love
sometimes means letting go. I always thought
that growing up meant severing emotional and
physical ties. I always thought that in-
dependence meant hiding your hurt from your
parents because "big girls" need to learn to
handle it on their own. It Is at these times that
you wait always letting me know that even the
biggest girls need moms and dads sometimes.
I guess that Is what they mean when they say
love is patient.
Mom you always ask me if I eat right and I
pretend to be irritated because you asked but
I'd worry if you didn't. I guess the biggest favor
you did for me was raising me in a Christian
home. You modeled for me a lifestyle that
helped teach me right and wrong. You see me
struggle and fall and succumb to temptations.
Yet you let me pick myself up and help me learn
from It all.
Perhaps I'm being too mushy but you've
done so much for me and I hardly ever tell you
how much I love and appreciate you.
I love you

Welcome new freshmen!
By now you probably have become
reasonably well settled in to what college is
like. You likely have had at least one test In
each class and with the freedom you have in
college and the responsibility to take initiative
and study as you've never had probably you
have said to yourself more than once "This is
not like high school!"
I have a hunch this is one of the most ex-
citing times of your whole life. You are moving
away from home In some significant ways and
yet you continue to be tied there. Your new in-
dependence is exciting and also although you
may not be comfortable admitting it a little
scary.
You may still be unsettled on whether you
can handle college work. In your head you know
you are capable; your ACT scores and high
school grades say you can do the work but
sometimes you feel that you just may not be
able to. If this describes you welcome to the
club! Many many before you have felt just this
way.
You are among friends! There probably are
more warm friendly people per square inch on
these "Forty Acres" than on any comparable
plot of ground anywhere. This is one of the ex-
citing things about Hardin-Simmons University.
Your academic advisor is a true friend with your
best Interest at heart. Your professors are in-
terested wanting the best for you. They stand
ready to be of help too.
By now you probably are feeling quite a part
of things. If you are not sensing this I com-
mend to you the verse in Proverbs that says "A
man to have friends must prove himself friend-
ly." As your counselor-to-students I stand ready
to be your advocate and friend. When you are
depressed or run into tough problems come by
so I can be of assistance. Phone me at
677-7281 ext. 316 or come by the office at
207-A in Moody Center. And Tuesday and
Thursday nights from 7 to 10 counselors are
available in the library. Do give us the oppor-
tunity to help.
Welcome to HSU!
