Last Tuesday night the Hadln-Slmmons University Cowgirls
defeated West Texas Statet77-72. Kim Ladner led alt scorers with 27
points followed by Charlotte Dehnel with 21. This was not just an or-
dinary victory for the Cowgirls however it brought their season record
to 19-13. That's an impressive record to say the least but there is one
fact about this year's record which makes it very special. The 1960-81
Cowgirls have earned the most wins of any Cowgirl team In history. In
1976-77 the Cowgirls were 17-9 and earned a berth in the state tourna-
ment. The Cowgirls are once again In the state playoffs and with 19
wins to their credit are the best Cowgirl team Hardln-Simmons has
ever had.
The team has seemed to have difficulty in the late part of the
season but appeared to repaln its form and confidence In the West
Texas game. The girls are led in scoring by Ladner who has scored at
a 1 5.9 points per game clip over the season. The 61 " center also leads
the team In rebounds with average of 11.7 per game. Senior forward
Charlotte Dehnel has averaged 13.4 points per game over the year and
is second in rebounding with an average of 9.1. Shirley Brinson has
averaged 13.2 points on the season and scored 14 points In the West
Texas victory. The remaining two starters guards Kathy Hunter and
Linda Grlder averaged 6.4 and 5.2 points respectively.
The Cowgirls are very deep in experience with fbur of five seniors
playing in their last season. Coach Peggy Williams has given the
seniors excellent opportunity to display their leadership and the four
have accepted the role and become the nucleus of the team. Dehnel
and Grlder both have been here for their entire career with Brinson
Joining the Cowgirls last season from Junior College and Ladner
transferring to HSU this year from the University of Hawaii. .
Regardless of the girls performance in the playoffs.their victorious
se'asqn has been the best we 'have ever seen. 1 congratulate them on
their mark In the history books and for their spirit of competition and
fot being the biggest winners evef.
