ROTC studtnts to atttnd camp
Nineteen students from the Tri-College
ROTC are scheduled to attend the 1978
Fort Riley Advanced Camp in Kansas
from June to mid-July.
Cadets who successfully complete camp
will either return to the campus to com-
plete their degree requirements or will be
commissioned as officers in the Active
Army its Reserve or National Guard.
Myers chairs inspection team
Lt Col. James Myers Professor of
Military Science was recently named
Chairman of the ROTC Inspection Team
representing the Southern Association.
The Team evaluated the Abilene In-
dependent School District in March.
HSU trio tour Northwest
Hardin-Simmons students Wayne
McClellan and James Steel presented a
series of concerts in Washington and
British Columbia Canada during the
university's spring holidays.
The pair accompanied Pat Luttrell H-
SU admissions counselor on a recruit-
ment tour March 25-April 3.
Cowboy Band in Houston
The Hardin-Simmons Cowboy Band has
been invited to perform at the annual
convention of the Texas Oil Marketers
Association in Houston today.
The invitation to perform at the con-
vention's noon luncheon was issued by BUI
Wright president of Western Marketing
Inc. in Abilene and a member of the H-SU
Board of Trustees.
Carver accepted to dental school
Sharon Carver a 1977 graduate of
Hardin-Simmons has been accepted for
study at Washington University Dental
School in St. Louis. She will begin study
there in September.
Overseas study competition opens
The Institute of International Education
recently announced the off idal opening of
the 1979-80 competition for grants for
graduate study or research abroad in
academic fields and for professional
training in the creative and performing
arts is scheduled for May 1 1978.
Interested students should contact the
campus Fulbright Program Adviser Dr.
Jim E. Tanner located in Sandefer
Memorial 304 for further information and
application material.
Haire presents lecture
A research chemist from Oak Ridge
(Tenn.) National Laboratory Dr. R.G.
Hilre presented an informative lecture at
Hardin-Simmons Thursday April 8. The
appearance is part of the 1977-78 lec-
tureship program sponsored by the Robert
A. Welch Foundation of Houston.
Tri-Beta inducts members
Tri-Beta National Biology Honor Society
recently inducted eight new members.
These include Bobtai Bean Jeanne
Henninger Robert Lawson Brad Pender
Kerry Sarchet Laura Schairer Laurel
Williamson and Nancy Hall.
Hughes to give recital
The Hardin-Simmons University School
of Music will present the senior voice
recital of Colleen Hughes Saturday April
8 at 8 p.m. in Woodward-Dellis Recital
Hall.
Hispanic award set
An Annual Award for the Outstanding
Student of Hispanic Origin is being
established at Hardin-Simmons. The idea
for the award originated largely will 1st
Lt Josue Martinez an H-SU alumnus who
has made the first contribution toward
endowing the award.
H-SU in riffle match
The H-SU rifle team will compete with 13
other schools in a Southwestern Rifle
Association (SRA) tournament Saturday
April 8 at the University of Texas in
Austin.
ROTC labs take trips
Three separate leadership labs from the
ROTC department are leaving today on
weekend field trips involving a total of 46
students.Tbe 12-member water safety lab
group will travel to New Braunfels
camping out by the Guadalupe River and
also canoeing through its waters.
Congress to wash cars
Student Congress will sponsor a car
wash Saturday April 8 beginning at 1
p-m. on the parking lot of Security State
Bank on Judge Ely Blvd. Price for
washing will be $1.
MPA rep to visit
Dr. Richard Milsap a member of the
political science faculty at Texas Christian
University will be in Moody Center
Monday April 17 from 11 a on. to 1 pan. to
explain TCU's Master of Public Ad-
ministration program.
Ray tenders resignation
Dr. David Ray assistant vice president
for development at Hardin-Simmons
University for the past three and one-half
years has resigned effective May 31. He
will enter a full-time preaching ministry
and will continue to reside in Abilene.
Ray said that his entry into a full-time
ministry meant that be would now be
available to churches on a full-time basis
for revivals Bible conferences dty and
area-wide crusades and other speaking
engagements.
Commenting on Ray's resignation Dr.
Clyde Childers vice president for
development stated "Dr. David Ray has
served our university with outstanding
dedication an genuine devotion. He has
regularly contacted a host of people
throughout the vast West Texas area with
regard to financial support for H-SU.
"It has been a Joy to have him in the
department and all of us wish him God's
choicest blessings in his new endeavor We
are glad that he and his lovely family will
remain in Abilene."
Hardin-Simmons President Jesse C.
Fletcher added "Dr. Ray's loss will be
keenly felt Our consolation will be that
everywhere he goes he will reflect well on
H-SU and will by his effective ministry
continue to strengthen the University's
influence."
Ray has been selected in the past to
speak at botn Gkrieta Baptist Assembly hi
New Mexico and at Falls Creak Baptist
Assembly In Oklahoma. He has spoken
before state Baptist evangelism con-
ferences in Texas and Oregon and has
conducted 100 revivals in 18 states and k
Jamaica.
Ray was first named to the H-SU Board
of Development in 1988 while serving as
pastor of the First Baptist Church of
Lubbock. He resigned his pastorate in 1172
to return to the business world. In 1974 he
was named to his current position at
Hardin-Simmons.
A native of Abilene Ray graduated from
WyUe High School in 1960 then went on to
receive the bachelor of business ad-
ministration degree from H-SU in 1954. In
later years Ray received three separate
degrees from Southwestern Baptist
Theological Seminary in Fort Worth the
last being the Doctor of Theology degree in
1976. He was also given an honorary
Doctor of Divinity degree by Hardin-
Simmons in 1969.
5th Pastor's Conference
to feature Garland Pleitz
The H-SU Division of Religion win
sponsor the Fifth Annual Spring Pastor's
Conference Tuesday April 1 in room 308
of Moody Center.
Featured speakers for the conference
wiU be Dr. David Garland speaking on
"Faith For a New World" and "A Faith
That Asks No Miracle" and Dr. James
Pleitz whose topics win be "The Tyranny
of the Urgent" and "Contagious Religion."
Dr. Garland is Professor of Old
Testament at Southwestern Baptist
Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He
graduated from the University of
Arkansas at Monticello and also received
degrees from Southern Seminary in
LouisvUle Ky.
Dr. Pleitz is now pastor of Park Cities
Baptist Church in Dallas. He is a graduate
of Ouachita Baptist University in
Arkadelphia. Ark. and Southern
Seminary.
Numerous Baptist pastors from the
West Texas area are expected to attend
the conference and students and faculty
are also invited. The morning assign wfll
