the University of Nebraska. He
found an ill-disciplined and dis-
interested handful of cadets and
a prevailing anti-military senti-
ment throughout the student
body. Rather than simply ac-
cepting the situation Pershing set
about instilling pride and dis-
cipline in them and formed a
crack drill team.
The unit won the Omaha Cup
and $1500 in its first competition
and thus the National Society of
Pershing Rifles was born in 1894.
From this parent unit the Society
spread to colleges and universi-
ties throughout the United States
and was expanded to include
cadets in training for all three
branches of the armed forces.
The Pershing Rifles came to
Hardin-Simmons in 1954 when
Company L of the 7th Regiment
received its charter. Since then
the Company has been transfer-
red to the 17th Regiment with its
headquarters at Trinity Univer-
sity in San Antonio. Each year
there is a Regimental Assembly
at Trinity and for the last two
years Company L has won the
Best Company Award as well as
the Regimental Sponsor Competition
