Track Team to Compete
In Southwestern Recreation
Coach Vernon Hilliard will be
taking the Hardin-Simmons track
team to Fort Worth this weekend
for the Southwestern Recreation
Track and Field Meet. This will
be the first competition of the
season for Hardin-Simmons after
bad weather cancelled their home
opener against the University of
Wichita last week.
Discus thrower Russ Seitzinger
will head the squad of 18 men go-
ing to Fort Worth. Seitzinger a
6-5 14t-pound sophomore from
Pittsburgh Pa. Seitzinger set a
new discus mark in the college
division at Font Worth last year
with a toss of 160 feet 8 inches.
This spring Seitzinger has been
throwing consistently around 170
feet and has thrown around 180.
Hilliard plans to enter nine
freshmen in the freshman-junior
college division. This will mark
the first such entry in Hardin-
Simmons history.
Hilliard plans to enter eight
varsity men in only seven events
feeling that the remainder of the
squad is not in shape because of
the inability to workout regularly.
Other varsity participants include
sprinter Paul Hinds distance run-
ners Jim Ailing and Les Bran-
ham middle-distance men David
Brown Dave Kissinger Richard
Irwin and Johnny Bradshaw.
Goza Branham Bradshaw and
Irwin will comprise the mile re-
lay unit.
Freshman entries include dis-
tance runners Jim Horton and
Lynn Mattis hurdlers Raynor
Reavis and. David Thigpen. field
men Larry Secor John Adams
and Tommy Sims and 40-yard
dashmen Pat DeBusk and Gary
Waldrop.
Hilliard has been working the
team extra hard this week to try
and round them into shape. Cold
wet weather has prevented the
Cowboys from getting in the out-
side work needed. When the
team gets in better condition
more events will be entered.
Following the Southwestern
Recreation event the Cowboys
will enter the West Texas Relays
in Odessa next weekend.

Bad Weather Slows
Cowboy Grid Drills
An in-between battle with the
weather and a deadline faces the
Hardin-Simmons University foot-
ball squad this week as Coach
Howard MoChesney and his staff
attempt to conclude spring grid
drills which began Feb. 15.
The Cowboys have 35 days to
get in the 20 practice sessions and
the deadline ends next weekend.
With the weatherman cooperating
the team will be able to finish up.
Plans call for the intra-squad
game between the Purples and
Whites to conclude the spring ses-
sion Saturday March 19. The
game will be played in Parramore
Stadium at 2 p. m. Admission will
be $1.00 for adults and 50 cents
for students. McChesney plans
to divide the squad evenly into
two teams.
The Cowboys had worked ' a
total of nine days through Satur-
day and cold weather prevented
a workout on that day. The
team's only drill last week was
Thursday afternoon. The Pokes
have 12 more days left before the
deadline to get in 11 days of drills.
Coaches have been impressed
with the squad during the limited
drills. "The team has shown
plenty of hustle and desire" com-
mented McChesney. "Until last
week the team looked good but
looked bad Thursday because we
had been of so long" he added.
