Buffaloes Spoil Border
Opener for H-SU Pokes
iLast week saw the Hardin-Sim-mons
Cowboys break even in two
basketball tilts. This left the
Cowboys with a 4-8 season rec-
ord. Wednesday night the Pokes
journeyed to Wichita Falls where
they scored a 72-58 win over
Midwestern University. Joe Ar-
den played the leading role as he
bucketed 19 points and captured
20 rebounds. Dave Kissinger and
Milton Martin made 18 and 16
points respectively. Wayne Davis
with 16 points topped Midwestern
scoring.
Hardin-Simmons pulled ahead
early in the game and held a
44-33 margin at halftime. The
Cowboys continued to outplay
Midwestern in the second half
and pulled to a 19-point lead be-
fore sending in reserves. The

win gained revenge for a loss suf-
fered to Midwestern to open the
season in Abilene.
The West Texas State Buffaloes
invaded Rose Field House Friday
night to open Border Conference
play and left with a record break-
ing 102-84 victory over Hardin-'
Simmons. The 102 points tied
the Rose Field House record set
by the Cowboys against Corpus
Christi University in 1955.
West Texas State led by Milt
Fitts played what was probably
their best game of the year and
outshot outrebounded and out-
played the Cowboys. The game
was close for the first 10 minutes
but after that the Buffaloes lead
was never less than 15 points.
Jim Curtsinger and Fitts started
the first half rally that enabled
West Texas to race to a 52-35
halftime lead. It was a fast break
that caused the Cowboy down-
fall as time after time West Texas
had a man loose for the easy shot.
Hardin-Simmons stopped the fast
break with a tight man-to-man
defense in the second half but
the damage had already been
done.
In the second half West Texas
State quickly extended their lead
to 20 points and played even ball
with Hardin-Simmons for the rest

oeuer oau in tne second half but
the torrid shooting by the Buf-
faloes kept the margin at 20
points.
Joe Arden once again paced
the Cowboys in scoring as he
racked up 26 points. Milton
Martin had 16 and Dallas Christ-
ian 12. Milt Fitts lived up to his
All-Border Conference rating as
he made 29 points and had 13 re-
bounds. The other four West
Texas State starters also scored
in double figures.
Both teams played ragged ball
at times as 55 fouls were called.
Hardin-Simmons cashed in for 30
charity points while West Texas
had 24. The margin of difference
in the game was in the 39-27 field
goal advantage for the Buffaloes.
This week the Cowboys invade
Arizona for two very important
conference games. Friday the
Pokes play the University of
Arizona in Tucson and Saturday
play Arizona State University in
Tempe. If H-SU hopes to remain
in contention for the Border
championship they must make a
good showing in these games.
Next home game will be Jan.
25 against a strong North Texas
State College team.

Buttons Top West
Texas State Frosh
The Cowboys herded the Buf
faloes Friday night when the
H-SU Freshmen defeated the
West Texas State Frosh. The
young Buffs made an exciting
game but could never quite
match the Buttons. ' The final
outcome of 87-75 was a good indi-
cation of the type of game played
as the freshmen held a small lead
for almost the whole game.
Nicky Wilson and Fat DeBusk
led the Buttons with 20 and 18
points with Mickey Wolfe and
Jackie Barron chipping in with
13 apiece. The Buttons displayed
one of the finest team efforts and
played a well balanced game with
no one man hogging scoring
honors. Sonny Blankenship led
West Texas State scoring with
19 points.
For the season the Buttons
now stand 7-4 but have played
even better ball than their rec-
ord indicates. Several of the
freshmen appear capable of being
able to make the varsity next
year. Top performances to date
have been Barry Oxford Nicky-
Wilson and Pat DeBusk.
