DISHWASHERS KILL
MORE BACTERIA
Automatic dishwashers may
contribute to better family
health--besides saving time and
energy.
A recent study by the
University of Louisville School
of Medicine indicates mechan-
ical dishwashers significantly
reduce bacteria on washed
dishes.
For instance, the study found
an average of 390 bacteria per
plate on hand-washed dishes,
while machine-washed dishes
had less than one bacteria per
plate.
Certain hand-washed ones
had a count of 16,000 bacteria
per plate.

These high counts weren't
surprising because bacteria are
ever-present on hands, working
surfaces, dish cloths, sponges,
towels and scrapers.
Since automatic dishwashers
don't contact these bacteria-
carrying surfaces, dishes have
lower bacteria counts.
Also, longer washing times at
high temperatures, which sani-
tize dishes, result in fewer
bacteria.
Mechanical dishwashers use
water 140-160 degrees F.-fully
30-40 degrees hotter than most
people can tolerate when
hand-washing dishes.
Although all bacteria aren’t
harmful, some cause respira-
tory, kidney and intestinal
infections.
When discarding unusable
clothing, be sure to save the
buttons. These may come in
handy for future quick replace-
ments or eliminate expensive
button purchases later.

In planning closet space,
allow three inches in width for
each hanger you use. Keep
hooks for hanging belts or strap
garments to the front of the
closet space-just inside the
door openings.
ln comparing appliances for
efficiency, consider both the
normal length of time each is
used and its wattage. For
example, a 100-watt mixer run
for one minute uses more power
than a 250-watt blender run for
15 seconds.
The seam ripper is a handy
tool for taking out seams and
removing stitches--but it must
be used carefully to prevent
cutting the fabric.
