ARTS DEGREES IN SUMMER COMMENCEMENT
9 Instructors To Conduct
Tenth Annual Band School
A faculty consisting of nine
instructors has been named to
conduct the tenth annual Band
School to be held on the Hardin-
Simmons university campus Aug-
ust 15-27 Marion B. McClure
director has announced.
The school headed by Milburn
E. Carey director of the Phillips
University concert band of Enid
Oklahoma will offer courses in
coaching classes in conducting
harmony and musicianship.
Instructors for the music camp
include Burgess Brown a mem-
ber of the R. M. White Music com-
pany who will instruct the wood-
wind classes. He ie a graduate of
H-SU has done graduate work in
Chicago and at Texas Tech in
Lubbock. He has been band direc

Dean W. A. Stephenson head of
the government department of
Hardin-Simmons university is
one of three Abilene men whose
achievements appear in the second
international Who's Who. The
other two men are Frank Grimes
editor of the Reporter-News and
Don Morris president of Abilene
Christian College.
Stephenson who is assistant
dean of H-SU first came to this
campus as an instructor in 1925.
His first position was assistant
professor of history then in 1930
he became associate professor of
government and has beenin that
department ever since.

For Pi Gamma Mu Meet
The Nationalization of basic in-
dustries in the United States will
be the topic for discussion at the
August 11 meeting of Pi Gamma
Mu in the parlor room of Hunter
hall Dean W. A. Stephenson
president of the organization said
today.
The subject will include the
five w's who what where when
and why.
Selection of officers of Pi Gam-
ma Mu will be made in the fall
Stephenson said.

partment; Macon Sumerlin assist-
ant professor of theory and com-
position at H-SU Norma Kniffen
instructor in baton twirling; Lloyd
Mitchell rope twirling artist! and
Otho Polk associate professor of
physical education at H-SU. He
will be in charge of the recreation
program for the school.
Washington university and the
University of Texas.
He has served two years as
president of the Abilene Rotary
Club and two years as district
governor or Rotary International.
He is a member of Alpha Chi Pi
Sigma Alpha Pi Gamma Mu and
Pi Kappa Delta. He is a member
of the American Political Science
Association American Academy
of Political and Social Science
American Foreign Policy Asso-
ciation Southern Social Science
Association Southern Political
Science Association and the West
Texas Historical Assn.
These are but a few of his
many accomplishments. For more
detailed biogriphical informa-
tion there is approximately seven
inches of elite type in the Inter-
national World Who's Who.
Purpose of Pi Gamma Mu is
to improve scholarship in the
social studies and to achive syn-
thesis therein; to inspire social
service to humanity by an intel-
ligent approach to the solution of
social problems; to engender sym-
pathy toward others with differ-
ent opinions and institutions by a
better natural understanding; and
to supplement and to support but
not to supplant existing social
science organizations by promot-
ing sociability and attendance at
meetings.

the Cowboy band while it plays
for the Top o' Texas show in
Pampa this week Wednesday
through Saturday. Guirmarin has
attended the rodeo annually

Former Bronco editor Nathan
Ivey has been appointed Co-or-dinator
of distributive education
for Bowie senior high school El
Paso according to school officials.
Ivey who edited the yearbook
in 1948 is current assistant busi-
ness manager of the H-SU Brand.
Ivey majored in Business admin-
istration and English. He has been
insummer school completing re-
quirements for a teachers certifi-
cate. Ivey who hails from Buffalo
Texas will assume duties August
8.

At least five of the 225 students
who will receive degrees at the
commencement exercises August
19 completed their work in two
and one half years. Ben Brock

master of arts degrees at the H-
SU commencement exercises
August 19 it has been announced
by A. B. Lee registrar. The group
comprises the largest master of
arts graduating class in the his-
tory of the school.

FOR FALL STUDENTS

for many improvements on the
Hardin-Simmons University cam-
pus. Getting ready for the 1949-
50 school year H-SU has set out
to make certain alterations which
will make campus life more pleas-
ant. Steam heat will replace gas

TO L.S.B. MEET
Dr. Arthur Travis spoke on
"Looking unto Jesus" at the regu-
lar Tuesday meeting of the Life
Service Band. Jimmy Feather-
stone sang "Wherever He Leads
I'll Go'. Rosa Kolb ended the
program by leading the group in
singing "Turn your eyes upon
Jesus."
Ten members of the group met
after the meeting to finish soding
the grounds with grass and plant-
in ga number of shrubs. An air
conditioner has been installed in
the Ross Adams Hall which makes
it more pleasant for meeting pur-
poses. The average laymen would
say that the summer LSB is ful-
filling its aim by preparing the
Band for the fall semester in
"Looking Unto Jesus."

dormitory. New plumbing is being
installed throughout the dorm
Many students living in the dorm
this summer are working on the
project afternoons.
