Long Bull's Eye
It wasn't long before the Cowboys
again were rocking the Dons on their
neeis. itusscn intercepted a pass
Mosconl intended for Fisk at the
H-SU 47. t
Bam! Goodnight had hit Russell
ywlth a high arching chunk way down
on the 19-yard line and the little 105-
pounder was in tho clear. Ho raced
untouched across tho goal line for
the touchdown a play that netted 53
yards. Evans try for extra point
was blocked by Tackle Bob Keith.
All that had happened in ten min-
utes. Tho Dons engineered themselves
into their first scoring position on
the second play of tho second stanza.
Fisk's 04 yard punt rolled dead on the
seven and Russell punted out only 28
yards to the Cowboys' 35.
Mosconl Over
Fisk and Johnson lacked inches of
making a first down in three stabs
at the line then an offside penalty
against Hardln-Slmmons gave the
Dons a first just shy of the 20. Sam
Johnston circled left end for eight and
Mosconi grabbed off two at guard for
a first on the Cowboy nine. After
Fisk ploughed through center for four
Mosconi brushed off right tackle for
the coast team's first touchdown.
The kick for extra point was never
attempted Walt Pudoff fumbling the
snapback as Evans and Moore smoth-
ered him.
Russell took the next klckoff on
the five weaved his way through tho
advance guard of tacklcrs and broke
for the clear near the right sideline.
Mosconi tho safety man and the last
defender between him and the goal
line finally brought down the elusive
Cowboy on the Dons' 33. The runback
was good for 02 yards.
Mullins mauled the line for six then
Russell bulletcd one to Burrus for
seven more. Three plays later Good-
night chunked to Walsh in the end
zono for a tally. Evans' kick was
wide.
The score rocked "along at 22-0
through the rest of the first half.
Hop and a Skip
Early in the third quarter Hardin-
Simmons' passing trickery was
launched again in a drive that carried
68 yards for a score Jn five plays.
After Bill Telesmanicwho played a
great game at end for the invaders
spilled Goodnight for a 12-yard loss
the H-SU co-captain cosed in a
"screened" pass to Mullins for 14.
Parker was under one of Russell's
heaves at the 20 and the big Ozona
senior tugged and pulled his way
down to the 12. The play was good
for 43 yards. The next pass was
grounded so Mullins steamed up for
a jarring ride over the middle to
score shaking off three husky Dons
on the rough trip. Moore's try for
point was blocked by Keith.

day. Taking over on their own 35
following tho Cowboys' customary
out-of-bounds klckoff Fisk got off a
20-yard peg to Mosconl who reversed
his field at tho 45 and sprinted un-
molested for tho score. Fisk's kick
was wide.

In the game San Francisco pushed
right back into scoring territory.
Tommy Chndwick apparently broko
up tho rally with an interception at
the two-yard lino but he fumbled on
the play and Mosconi covered for the
visitors. Fisk was stopped on two
thrusts inside tackle then ho lum-
bered over right guard for the team's
third touchdown Prcscott blocked
Mosconi's kick as the day's scoring
was ended.
The Cowboys missed a golden op.
portunity to score late in the game.
Russell got off a 47 yard kick that
was killed on the San Francisco two
by Burrus.
Fisk gambled successfully in throw-
ing a 10-yard pass to Telesmanic but
the next shot was gathered in by

and Mullins ripped off a first down
at tho 23 then Mullins sliced off
tackle to the 11. The husky Cowboy
fullback fumbled on the next play
however and the ball game ended a
few plays later.
Outstanding in the Cowboys' line
defensively were Parker at end Tread-

Moore and Baker at the guards. The
Dons' best defensive performers were
Ends Russ Kynock and Telesmanic
and Tackle Keith.

Blap down the Haven of Rest 0 to 0
in tho intramural grid season's finale
Thursday afternoon.
Realizing it might bo their last
scoring chance the Wrecks put on a
drivo that terminated with a pay-off
aerial thrust from Stephens to Bon
ner for 15 yards and tho lone tally
of tho afternoon. Stephens passed
incomplete for point.
The win gave the undisputed intra
mural championship to tho Wrecks
darkhorso of tho league who after a
slow start early in the season put
on a whirlwind finish to snatch tho
pennant from the favored Brand-
Bronco and Haven of Rest teams.
Early in tho gamo Thursday tho
Wrecks failed to cash their first scor-
ing chanco when a field goal try by
Bonner went wide.
Fighting back desperately tho H.
O. R. gang marched down the field
on n concerted last quarter drive that
failed to knot tho score when they
were held by an iron-clad Wreck dc-
fenso on tho onc-foot line.
Statistics showed the close match
of tho teams. Tho Ranmbling Wrecks
completed 14 of 27 posses with two in-
tercepted making two first downs.
Haven of Rest completed 12 of 24
passes managing five first downs.

the bouncing leather as Uncle Joe
Smith ran his prospects through their
first real workouts.
Some dozen cage hopefuls raced up
nnd down the boards this week and
found that although tho air is free
it is sometimes hard to get during
workouts. Perspiration streamed off
the boys liko it might be mid-summer
Instead of early December.
The hoopstcrs are showing much
enthusiasm and some flash good form
for early season.
In a glance at Monday's practice
two transfers Lcland Casey and
Claude Brown who hail from Tyler
Junior College looked like they might
develop into standout players. They
come from East Texas where a bas-
ketball player has to be good to make
the grade.
Uncle Joe knows basketball and
likes the game. And he can still sink
the leather from mid-court himself.
IT IS TOO BAD
that the first undefeated untied
team in tho history of Hardin-Slm-mons
could not have a chance to show
the brilliant form that carried them
through a tough schedule untarnished
before a crowd of post season game
spectators. There is no denying that
any lover of football would have got-
ten his money's worth out of watch-
ing this great and colorful juggernaut
operate in some bowl.
It is tough that most of the
13 seniors who have worked hard
the past four years will not have
one more chance to perform as
well as get in on the post season
'glory and material reward that
comes with such games.
A few of tho boys will be fortunate
enough to play in tho various special
promotion games over the country
and maybo go on into tho profes-
sional field. But for the majority
their football career is already past
history.
And without a chance to ploy one
of the nation's top teams we'll never
know just how good tho great Cowboy-team
of 1940 really was. But we
do know that they were the cock of
the walk during tho regular season
with thoir superiority never being ser-
iously challenged after they got un-
der way.
