An unimposlng quintet of basket-
ccrs from Saint Edwards University
found out very soon Monday night
that tho sky-high Slmmonsmcn were
playing over their heads and rendered
out tho proud score of 22 in compari-
son with Simmons' 68.
A valiant squad tussled nnd grunt-
ed for a scoring position in tho first
whistle while McCollum and his men
had already scored 0 points before the
opposition scratched.
Advantaged by reach and height
over tho St. Eds group tho Simmons
squad romped and pitched tho candy
through the basket while tho stumpy
beaten boys from the state crtpitol
stood back and grabbed occasionally
at the prized ball.
McCollum again bounded across tho
hardwood for another set of scoring
honors tallying up 23 points for his
personal scoreboard 20 of which were
field goals. He took advantage of
tho fragilo hoopmen to make his own
conference record more secure.
Higgins of St. Edwards had ho
had four men like himself only could
have brought the team up to Simmons'
requirements. Ho attempted a one-
man tussle but this did not last but
until the early part of tho second half.
Ho was taller than most of the Sim-
mons men. Ho had three personal
fouls assessed against him In tho first
few minutes of play; Evans Saints
guard also went to tho bench In tho
last period.
Coach Cranfill politely waited un
til tho last few minutes of play be-
fore he turned the windjammlng re-
serves loose from their cages the
score then safely In Simmons' hands
with CO to 18 rung up.

for tho outlaw-league of Simmons to

develop tho best dribblers that ever
dribbled n basket ball across tho hard-
wood. Tho league started with the inten-
tion of giving some of the boys tho ex-
ercise that they need nnd has suc-
ceeded in doing that very thing. Tho
league has given the boys plenty of
physical training it has also develop-
ed a lot of Interest among tho other
students in school. If you arc one
of those students that have been miss
ing those games you should take the
afternoon off somo time nnd go over
to tho Corral and see those boys per-
form. Now to take up some of the Indi
vidual performers: Tho Stevenson

is o great handicap. C. Stevenson

These three boys arc a
ahead of the field but
tho same perfection. . . judging by
tho amount of dribbling thnt they do.
Somo of theso boys are: Hrond Ardls
Pat Patterson Wilbanks Armstrong
Hyron Strain. Big McCleod dribbles
'the ball one time every timo that he
secures the ball.
Some seem to have a pretty good
eye for the basket judging from the
individual scores. Last week nibble
was lending with 81 points. There has
been little change In tho scoring or-

Track Men Work
As Season Nears
Basketbnll season Is rapidly taper-
ing to an end and with that end all
eyes will bo trained on Simmons'
track aspirants. Somo of tho track
men have been working out for about
three weeks. The boys that havo been
working are: Crelghton Thompson
440 men; Hardin Riley distance men;
Sheppard. middle dlstanco man; Wom-
nck dash man and Mabcrry nnd Smith
two men who aro coming out for what
tho ennch thinks best for them.
Whon'tho basketball season is over
most of the boys on tho squad will re-
port for track. Tho following men
will report then; Mcuouum miauiu
distanco man: Wranosky Pee nnd
Koonco woight men: Winters 440 man:
Hucstis (Captain) Vaulter: Hill Hur-
dler: Andrus Hurdles dashes nnd
jumps.
With theso 10 men Coach Anderson
thinks thnt ho will havo a track team
that will give account of itself in tho
conferenco meet this spring. Coach
says that If tho men get in shape in
'time for tho meet in Ft. Worth next
month ho is going to take a team to
that meet.
Are you suro your folks know I
am coming home with you?
They ought to; 1 argued with them
for a. whole' hour about it.
GREETINGS folks looks like we aro
in for a nice cold wnit until wo hnv0
another basketball game nt home. Tho
next one however Is the big homo
attraction of tho year ngalnst our
dearly-beloved friends tho Yellow
Jackets. On these cold nights it's
nice to lay In bed and dream of tho
championship flap resting safely on
the flag-pole in the Cowhands pos-
session. I'll bet that is what most
of tho boys are doing.
Things will be in a "bad way" for
the Cowhands if they happen to lose
n game from here on out on account
that the A. C. C. Wildcats look like
a cinch to finish their schedule with
but one loss marked against tnem.
Since their schedule calls for two
more games than the Cowboys play
they would be the champions if we
i.nnnon tn lnqo n came. So far the
Cowboys have beaten every member
of the conference that they have to
play this winter by a large score and
if things don't go "hay-wlro" they
are duo to come through with flying
colors.
According to somo Abilene people
who nro loyal followers of tho Wild-
cats and a few out of town people
tho Wildcats have n better team than
tho Cowboys. Let me give these cer-
toin pcoplo n little dope on the mat-
ter beforo they "award" tho Wild-
cats with tho "supposed-to-bo" tro-
phy. Howard Payno beat A. C. C. in
Rrownwood 31-30. Tho Simmons ath
letes went to Drownwood nnd took
tho Yellow Jackets down 07-50 nnd
in doing so Bet a new conference
scoring record. That ought to bo suf
ficient dope to show thnt tho Cow-
boys aro a shado strongor than tho
Wildcats.
The way tho Southwestern game
was played it resembled a football
contest but believe It or not It was
a conference basketball game. Out-
side of a few clean tackles some
nice blocks and a little stiff-arming
it was a good clean game. Muybo
the enemy didn't mean to bo so rough
and all that but they were and what
hurts still more they got by with
I most of it. I guess the Cowhands
will have to let the reserves play
them next time because it's a known
fact that they can give and take it
when it comes to rough basketball.
Now don't think that they arc not
capable basketball men because they
have played the variety some real
close games in scrimmage they just
naturally like it rough.
We have been asked to name the
six best basketbnll men of tho Texas
conference. Now that is a tough as-
signment and is subject to much crit-
icism but regardless of the fact here
goes. First of all there is Gene Mc-
Collum tho league's leading scorer
nnd one of tho best guards that ever
played on tho hardwood. Then comes
Jimmy Neely Inst year's high scorer
and nll-conf. center. These two men
represent most of Simmons offense.
"Lefty" Reynolds A. C. C nnd "Red"
Bragg Howard Payne nro the lead-
ing forwards of tho conference while
Connlly Austin College center nnd
Taylor a Southwestern guard are
two more men who are outstanding In
the conference. If these men con-
tinue to play ball as they havo played
in tho pnst there is little doubt but
that fivo of them will make the all-
mythical tenm this winter. McCol-
lum is probnbly tho beat of tho lot
and If he continues hi3 present pace
ho will set n new conference scoring
record. Ho is just 17 points short of
a new record and hns 4 games to go.
Let me tnkc this opportunity to give
you a little dope" on me Simmons
football team of '32. Some people
didn't have much respect for the
Cowboys but listen to this. Sim-
mons according to "dope" had a 58
point better team than Army. Here
is where I get the "dope": Simmons
beat Tech 13-12 Tech beat Baylor
11-2. That would give Simmons 13
points on Baylor. Then Balor beat
S. M. U. 19-0 which would give Sim-
mons 32 points on S. M. U. Nebraska
who tied Pittsburgh only beat S. M.
U. 21-11. That would make Simmons
25 points better than Nebraska nnd
Pittsburgh because Nebraska tied
Pittsburgh. Then Pittsburgh beat
Notre Dame 12-0 which would make
Simmons 37 points better than Notre
Dame. To cap it all off Notre Dame
beat Army 21-0 making Simmons 58
points better than Army according
to "dope." That Is pretty good re-
gardless of the fact that it is only
"dope" from scores of games played
during the season. Simmons placed
well-up in the national ranking list
finishing above such schools as Har-
vard Navy Georgia and other big
schools. Maybe we couldn't beat these
schools If we were to play them but
it is interesting to note these things.
While wo nro on tho subject of
football wo would like to say a word
about ono of tho groatest players of
nil time none other than Harold 'Red'
Grange. Grange who has been play-
ing professional football for the last
8 years has decided to give up tho
game that has brought him so much
publicity and settle down to some
kind of business. Tho "Gallopin'
Ghost" ns ho is called In football cir
cles started his wonderful career at
the University of Illinois. He became
known throughout tho world ns one
of tho grentcst broken field runners
to ever step on n gridiron. His main
hobby was to run anywhero from 50
to 85 or 90 ynrds for a touchdown.
Grange not only could run with the
ball he was ono of the best pass re-
ceivers of tho game. We are sorry
that he has decided to give up foot-
ball but since ho has wo con truth-
fully say that tho game has lost ono
of its best sportsmen.

Knife Keeps Sherman
Clear of Cleburne Goal
There comes to our cars tho story
of a football game played between
Cleburne nnd Sherman more than
twenty yenrs ago ns told to Prexy
Anderson of tho Abilene Morning
News by Cecil Grlgg. Here it Is:
"Years ago long beforo tho organ-
ization of the interscholnstic league.
Sherman was playing Cleburne for
tho state championship. Neither side
had scored. It was bitterly cold nnd
spectators were packed In close to the
sidelines many of them on the field.
Cleburne sent in severnl substitutes
and ono of them lnid out near the
sidelines and borrowed a spectator's
overcoat. Suddenly beforo tho Sher-
man boys knew ho wnsn't just nn-
other fan the over-coat clad player
hnd caught a pass and raced down
tho sideline for n touchdown.
"Protests ngalnst tTiis little ruse
being unavailing tho Shermun boys
came back strong nnd drove down the
field to within n few yards of the
goal. At this stage of the game a
Cleburne partisan nil stenmed up by
tho cup that cheers stationed himself
just behind the gonl stripe pulled out
a long blnded knife and loudly pro-
claimed his intention of cutting the
Insides out of tho first Sherman play
er who crossed the line. This was
somewhat dampening to Sherman's
ardor and the game ended C to 0 In
Clcburno's favor.-
"Football hns progressed a long
way since then."
o
Already withering from its initial
engagement nt Simmons' corral St.
Edwards bnskctmen suffered defeat
twice before returning to their native
Austin. In tho face of below-zero
weather hero Tuesday night they
wilted beforo the clawing competition
of tho Abilene Christian College Wild-
cats in n 44 to 8 decision and on Wed-
nesday night tho weather no warmer
they fell beforo tho heap big braves
of McMurry college 42 to 17.
Scoring two field goals In the Chris-
tian title tho Saints found it Impos-
sible to touch the basket any more
after tho first half. It was a gross-
ly one-sided affair from then on. In
the fouls column A. C. C. marked up
5 personals to the Saints' 11.
Reynolds got enough goals to take
the scoring honors but the game was
one of his worst. His total was 13.
Jimmy Lawrence made a bid for first
place by shooting eleven points. He
was especially strong in the first
half.
The defeat Wednesday night in Mc-
Murray's favor raised tho aforemen-
tioned to fourth place in tho winter
mnrathon. a clear title with three
wins and thrco defeats. It also mark-
ed nnother basketball milestone that
of being tho tenth consecutive vic-
tory Abilcno teams have made agninst
out-of-town competition In the con-
ferences. A comedy of errors starring P.
Smith of McMurry drew laughs from
the shlvverlng onlookers In tho smash
when ho was downed twice by on-
rushing basketeers and left in the
dust. Again he came up dazed and
found a complete absence of equili-
brium when he bumped into various
players and was recalled to collect
himself.
Wednesday night's game was the
first that the Saints played here in
which they did not loso a man in per-
sonal fouls.
o -
Coach Anderson will ask for all
men interested in track to report to
him somo day next week. The an-
nouncement will be mndo in chapel
next week.
