demarkablo thing on Seminary Hill is the
fact that all tho rn.cn' women and children
are active Sunday School goers.

You starve what little thought you have
Then cheat the undertaker
By chopping" up tho lines a bit
To villlfy your Maker.
You see a little bit of sky
And think it's smeared with mud
Because' jour Pharisaic prayers .
Hit it' with a thud "r
You blaspheme God and Man
And call it poetry
And laugh because you can .
Fool 'em. Go it free.
Skim the scum from deeper pools
And drink it when you dine.
Curse the preachers and the poets
Throw your dart and cut your shine.
The earth will move as it has done
Throughout the ages fled
And He will guide the shining sun
When you are old and dead.
And when your jingle's jingled out
And the piper has been paid
Those who danced jo hear you play
Youth and father matron maid
Beside your' egotistic "verse"
Will bo. all silent laid.
You may curse the men who search the
Truth
You may curse the' sun and-rain
You may fling your darts at God'a great

And sneer at love and pain

Tjiere are many shining qualities in the
mind of man but there Is none so useful
as discretion; it fs this indeed that gives
a value to all the rest which sets them to
work In their proper times-and places and
turns them to tlie advantage of tho person
who Is possessed of them. Without It
learning is pedantry and wit imperti-
nence1 virtue itself looks like weakness;
tho. best parts only qualify a man to be
more sprightly In errors and active to his
own principle Addison

Difficulty is a severe instructor set over
us. by the supreme ordinance of a parental
guardian and legislator who knows us bet-
ter than we know ourselves; and He loves
us better too. He that wrestles with us
strengthens our nerves and sharpens our
skill. Our antagonism is our helper. Thl
amicable conflict with difficulty obliges- us
to an Intimate acquaintance with our ob-
ject and compels us to consider It In all
its relations.- It will not suffer us to be
superficial. Burke

. "I'se got somethin' better'n any job"
replied the other "I'se got a profession."
"What is it?"
"I'se a orator"
"What's a orator?"
"Don't you know?" replied the resplen-
dent one n surprise. "Well I'll tell you
what a orator is. If you was to walk up
to a ordinary nigger and ask him how
much was two and two he'd say 'four'
but if you was to ask one of us orators
how much was two and two he'd say
'When in de cou'se of human events it
becomes necessary to take de numeral of
de second denomination and add it to de
figger two I says unto you and I says it
without fear of successful contradiction
dat de result will lnvai'bly be four. Dat'a

The old graduate was back for his
twelfth reunion. How strange everything
seemed. The old familiar buildings were
not. tho same somehow. In fact they Were
different. He strolled along the old famil-
iar paths. They seemed to run in new di'
rections. . . . Sometimes they were parallel
sometimes' they crossed each other some-
times they approached infinity.
' On the green a baseball game was in
progress. Strange players strange uni-
forms. Good Lord the players wore a
strange color. "Heavensl" thought the' old
grad "Have' they changed the good old
college color?"
He gazed at the row; of buildings on his
left. Surely he must recognize some of
them. . . . If they would only stand still
a moment. There ought to be a law
against buildings acting like that. He
approached the nearest to examine the
carved inscription over the door.
."0h pshaw" he said "I'm in the wrong
college." Dartmouth Jack o' Lantern.
