the steady oak that braves the storm and ;. r;mcd for wbevcr il""v n'ht
drouths and yet in spite of these dillicul-.
ties grows silently onward and upward.
Simmons College now has seven modern
buildings on the campus among this num-
ber being one of the largest and best
equipped science buildings in the State
as well as one of the best equipt gym-
nasiums in the State. Last year the en-
rollment reached over a thousand stu-
dents; this year it will reach twelve hun-
dred and yet Simmons ii still in her in-
fancy. Some of our contemporaries back
in the sticks may hide their heads and
refuse to believe that there is a first-class
college in West Texas that offers oppor-
tunities second to none but fortunately
this does not make it so. Simmons Col-
lege has been built by that indominablc
western spirit that has blazed the trails
cleared fprests fought Indians and wrest-
ed millions of virgin acres from the hands
of the Indian the buffalo and the cactus
and made them bloom into beautiful gar-
dens ranches villages and towns. Sim-
mons College is on the map backed by
the western traditions and unconquered
western spirit! Her students know how to
meet obstacles" and overcome them. In-
cidently they know how to play basket-
ball. For the past five years Simmons has
had one of the very best basketball teams
in the State and yet in spite of this fact
our cistern colleges and universities and
the dail papers of the state refuse to give
her the proper recognition that she de-
serves. The Brand editor is not complain-
ing; all he wants is the opportunity of
seeing the Cowboys "lick the stuffin" out
of some of our Eastern Texas schools for
a fqw more years and perhaps it will per-
culate into their consciousness that there
is a Simmpns College and a We.t Texas.
The Simmons Hand.
The Brand editor does not pose as a
music critic but he is willing to risk his
musical reputation by declaring that Sim-
mons College now has the best brass band
that she has had in the past few years.
The program rendered in Chapel last week
by Director Bill Morris and the band was
what we would call a real classy program.
The college is indebted to the students
composing this organization for the splen-
did work they haye already done and'for
what they will do in tlie future There is
nothing that puts more "spizerinktum" in
to a crowd. pfKpilege students than a goodrto Mo.
live band and i that 13 the kind Simmons
has. Here's fifteen rahs for the Simmons
Band..'
The Brand Contest.
Beginning next week the organized
classes of the college will begin a contest
that is unique insofar as we know in col-
lege journalism.' The plan is to let each
class elect its class staff and issue an
tion of' the Brand. After each class has
issued its edition copies of each edition
will be placed jn the hands of competent I
newspaper men and judged and the win-
ning class will be giyen a silver loving
cup as a prize. This prize which is being
furnished by the Abilene Daily Reporter 1
will have engraved upon it each year the
name of the winning class together with
the class staff. The different classes have
accepted this opportunity to enter a lit-
'eracy contest with a great deal of enthu-
siasm and much interest is already being
manifested in the contest.

I saw it was the Freshman class.

to defeat n school that had succeeded in
