HSU's SIFE Continues Success
By Barrett Thomas
The Hardin-Simmons University
Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team is
going to have a tough time achieving the
kind of phenomenal success they did in
their inaugural year. However they are
determined to continue their success and
have already begun work for the new
year.
At the end of the 1999-2000 school
year HSU SIFE had not only earned a
spot among the top fifty four-year teams
in the world but also claimed $2250 in
prize money. At regional competition
they were named regional champion and
rookie of the year.
The winning continued from there as
the team's success in regional competition
allowed them to continue to the
International SIFE Exposition and Career
Fair in Kansas City. There the team was
dubbed second runner-up in semi-final
competition and received their second
Rookie of the Year award.
"Competition was extremely exciting.
The experince we gained in our rookie
year of competition is sure to carry us far
in the future" Staci Blevins co-president
of HSU SIFE said
After such an amazing year it was not
surprising that SIFE headquarters took
notice and chose the HSU SIFE Team as
one of five teams out of 700 around the
world to be featured on the new SIFE pro-
motional video.
The team's success was built by its
foundation of 40 completed projects com-
posed of 109 independent activities. The
projects varied from meeting with Russian
officials to discuss the ideas of free-enterprise
education running an economic fair
for sixth graders at the junior high in San
Saba Texas and connecting a group of
elementary students in Abilene to students
in China via the internet in order to teach
them about international trade and cultural
differences. The projects together reached
thousands of people.

Perhaps SIFE success is most accu-
rately judged by another criteria though.
SIFE creates opportunities such as career
fair and resume databases by which stu-
dents are introduced to possible employ-
ers from the 130 corporate sponsor
organizations (including Campbell's
AT&T Walgreen's Eckerd Office Depot
Sherwin-Williams Radio-Shack and
Wal-Mart) that support SIFE.
The two seniors on the HSU SIFE
team both received job offers as a result
of interviews conducted at the SIFE com-
petitions. "The job offers and opportunities are
the icing on the cake. The true value of
SIFE is found in the educational projects
and in helping others learn how to suc-
ceed in the business world" said Dr.
Coleman Patterson Sam Walton Fellow
of HSU SIFE.
The HSU SIFE team is already busy
on next year's projects. Some of these
projects have included: monthly interna
tional business programs with students
from St. John's Episcopal School pro-
viding computer training programs for
clients of non-profit organizations con-
ducting biblically based business ethics
cases with area youth groups and a series
of business and economics programs
with children from Abilene after-school
programs.
One of the most original projects
HSU SIFE is preparing for is a region-
wide educational project at Safety City in
conjunction with Abilene Junior
Achievement. The Safety City project
entitled "Our City" will be open to all
area third graders. In the project several
local businesses will use Safety City to
create a mock city in order to teach
young students about how a free-enterprise
economy runs.

SIFE Team by visiting its web site
