Long Effort of many Threatened by One Man
The history of hatred and
long standing feuds is a constant
threat to the delicate peace pro-
cess being conducted by Israel
and the PLO. The process is on
fragile ground and it takes very
little to send it fragmenting apart
Such an incident occurred last
week as Jews were preparing for
the feast of Purim and Moslems
were undergoing the ritual fast
during the month of Ramadan. A
lone gunman walked into the
Tomb of the Patriarchs in the oc-
cupied territory and used grenades
and an assault rifle to kill several
worshipping Moslems. The gun-
man was subdued and beaten to
death but the incident sparked a
series of riots by Arabs.

incidence of violence since the
Six Day War in 1967. The vio-

Rahat one youth was killed and
six wounded at a demonstration.
In Gaza city one man was killed
and 42 wounded when a soldier
fired into a Mosque. In Lebanon
a bomb exploded at a Marionite
Catholic Church killing several

at the Tomb of the Patriarchs.
Disruptions also occurred at
the diplomatic level. PLO Chair-
man Yasser Arafat recalled nego
tiators from Tunis. Syria Jordan
and Lebanon also withdrew nego-
tiators from talks with Israel.
The lone gunman was Baruch
Goldstein an ardent disciple of
Rabbi Meir Kahane who advo-
cated violence to eradicate Arabs
from areas deemed to be part of
the biblical Promised Land.
Goldstein had often talked of the
need for a major event to hurt the
peace process. He illustrated
major points of confrontation in
the Israeli-PLO talks being an
armed settler as well as being af-
