Editorial Comment
by Steve Zimmer
In the issue of the Brand
which was released two weeks
ago an article appeared on the
front page concerning the oc-
currence of a fire at a local
dormitory. Since that time I
have discussed this article with
several students as the article
that appeared was not mine.
On the eve of publication
my article was pulled and re-
viewed by members of the ad-
ministration. My original ar-
ticle had contained information
gathered from the HSU police
department a member of the
administration the two girls
themselves and sheets bearing
official residence hall informa-
tion. It was thought that my
article did not contain a com-
plete enough picture of the
event and could be inflamma-
tory (no pun intended) and as
such' was pulled. I was told that
I would need to consult one
other specific source and then I
could rewrite this article. But
to my amazement a story ap-
peared which was based on in-
formation from Dr. Whitehom.
The story focused on the reac-
tions of the residence hall advi-
sor. Only one paragraph the
allusion to the HSU police of-
ficer was from my original ar-
ticle. Theintentwascompletely
changed as my article had con-
tained the young women's side
of the "story and pointed out
areas in official regulations
which concerned the existence
of responsibility of thfr young
. women. As a reporter I feel -that
it is imperative to give a -voice
to those who may not -easily
have it. I felt that I was .
fair as -I put forth the
administration's position the
women's and a third party'in
the form of the campus police.
There were no judgements
made in the article and after
consulting the information
source that I was told to con-
sult I found that none of the
facts had changed.
A poll released in the next
issue indicated that students
have a strong desire to know
what is going on and since that
time a lot of people have asked
me about this. The university
would not exist without the stu-
dents and as such it is their
right to know what is going on.
Sometimes this may involve
controversy but as adults with
strong moral aims aren't we
confident that the truth will
stand once both sides are pre-
sented? No censoring is not the an-
swer. All censorship does (in
any form) is say that exposure
to something will change you
completely as the grounds you
currently stand on would be
powerless and insignificant if
placed in view of something
else. 1 have faith in the ground
that I stand on and simple ex-
posure to something is not go-
ing to necessarily change me.
As such I think that it is
imperative for our paper to es-
tablish a policy concerning
these potential controversies.
Only then can we. truly be a
voice for the students and-oe
what a. true American paper
should be all about. Truth is
strong it will stand.
