The invocation was offered by Lewis Timberlake, Hyde Park Baptist
Church, Austin, as follows:
Father, we bow before you as people charged with a great responsibility
and filled with an overwhelming need.
We need more than the desire to do the right thing. We also need to
know what the right thing to do is. We need to recognize that no one ever
stands so tall as when they stoop to help another and that all of us are, in
some way, our brothers' keepers. Give us the power to look beyond the
person's external and see in each person the eternal.
We need the wisdom to use the talents and blessings you have given us
to give help and hope to somebody else. Help us to do more than merely
write on paper words that govern; let us write on the hearts and minds of the
people, truth that there is dignity of work and honor in integrity. Finally,
help us to live our lives so that it will be said of us, "Their lives were an
inspiration and their memories are a benediction." Amen.
