Soccer competition opens Saturday for the
17 member H-SU varsity team when
Austin College Visits Parramore Field at 2
p.m.
The Hardin-Slmmons varsity soccer
team opens its second year of competition
tomorrow when Austin College visits
Parramore Field at 2 p.m.
Head Coach Chuck Smith a sergeant-
major on the ROTC staff announced his
17-man roster earlier this week. Seven
"kickers" are back from the 1975 squad
including Bruce Cannon and Dan Neese
seniors.
Other veterans back for this season are
Robin Hood Bryce Garrett Tom -McMillan
S. Kent Parks and Lee Royal.
Newcomers are Rick Alkire Jim Barker
Ricky Blakely Jay Clark Steve Ditmore
Gary Fox Buddy Harmon Dave Hooten
Dave Pearson and Kenneth Tillery.
Coach Smith has seen a lot of good talent
during the team's daily work-outs and he
expects a fine season.
Smith also has worked up a brief ex-
planation of the game for those fans who
are still in the dark about soccer.
The game is played on a field roughly the
size of a football field with a goal at each
end. The game is played in two 45 minute
halves with no time-outs except for in-
juries or for official reasons.
Intentional body contact is not per-
mitted but as in basketball
aggressiveness in going after the ball is
legal. A player cannot touch the ball with
his arms or hands. Only the goalie can use
his arms and hands but only inside his
designated area.
The soccer team consists of 11 members
as in football. There is the goalie the
fullbacks (defensive players) the half-
backs (mid-field players) and the for-
wards who do most of the scoring. One
point is awarded for a team's .score and
the team with the most scores wins.
Manager and trainer for the team will be '
Brad Bradley. Ball girls for this year are
Pam McMurray and Debbie Little. The
ball girls retrieve the the ball when it
leaves the field of play.
Freshman basketball meeting set Monday
All boys interested in playing freshman
basketball have been asked to meet at 2
p.m. Monday Sept. 13 in Rose Field
House. Head Coach Preston Vice said the
meeting was called to determine
the number of men interested so that a
schedule can be arranged for next winter.
Anyone coming out for the frosh team
will have an opportunity to make the
varsity Coach Vice said. He cited one
freshman who "walked on" last year and
played well enough to earn a full
scholarship the second semester.
