Although the basketball season
is over or just about the head-
lines are still screaming about
New York players arrested for
throwing games. Some have been
hauled in for games played back
in 1949. Did someone look over
the scorebooks from '49 (the
pages have already turned yel-
low) and decide which games
were thrown? What kept the au-
thorities from waiting so long
before arresting players?
We admit the boys were wrong
in fixing games but why the
long delay? Some of the players
arrested had been out of school
two years. We think the game of

RONNIE S12EMORE
Ronnie Sizemore pint-sized
second baseman for coach Joe
Grba's Cowboy nine is from Cor-
pus Christi. Sizemore is a freshman
and weighs 175 pounds and stands
five feet seven inches. He says
baseball is his favorite sport.
Ronnie who is a business ma-
jor is going into construction
work with his father upon grad-
uation. Besides school and sports
he is a member of the National
Guard.
At Corpus Christi he earned
letters in baseball basketball
and football. Here at the Cowboy
school he has freshman letters in
football and basketball.
Hia batting average is .250
with two hits in eight trips to the
plate.

basketball should not be jeopard-
ized because a few went bad. A
person would have to be of strong
character to turn down the
money gamblers were offering.
Hats off to those who did turn
them down! And to those who
are still doing it in basketball
and other sports.
Still on basketball we see
where Bill Veeck the former
president of the professional
baseball Cleveland Indians is try-
ing to take the Harlem Globe-
trotters on a basketball trip be-
hind the Iron Curtain. The trot-
ters make up one of the best
basketball teams in the United
States.
There are many sports fans be-
hind the curtain as much as the
rest of the world. International
relations could be strengthened
on the tour.
If Veeck does get the Trotters
behind the curtain it will prove
that certain people can play in
Russian dominated lands that
can't play in some parts of the
U. S. We're 100 behind the idea
Bill.
Major league baseball will soon
take over the spotlight from bas-
ketball when the "pros" begin
the 1951 season during the third
week in April. A few clubs have
been hurt by the draft but it
looks like this season will be
just as good as last. Before the
season starts we pick the Phila-
delphia Phils to repeat in the
National league and the Boston
Red Sox to slip by the New York
Yankees in the American circuit.
Agree?
The West Texas-New Mexico
baseball league will give two at-
tendance awards this season. The
club having the largest paid at-
tendance for opening day will get
the President's Cup a permanent
trophy. This club also will get
the league's new temporary "per-
petual trophy."
Oh well some people will do
anything to get attendance. They
should give each ..person attend-
ing the opening game a trophy.
One player Joe Willmore
scored 104 points in a junior high
basketball tournament in West
Frankfort Illinois last week.
That's nearly four points a min-
ute for the 28 he played. Will-
more's team from Union school
beat Moore school 143 to 3.
After the game officials prob
ably ran all around yelling "Fix.
Fix."
We agree with the person who
said when asked about outlaw-
ing extra-tall men playing bas-
ketball "Don't raise the baskets
lower the floors."
