OF SIMMONS
Today is Simmons day at the Lueders Encampment and President
Sandefcr will speak in the afternoon; Rev. Sam Morris field. representative
will speak at the-evening houn Simmons is' one 'of the best schools in the
country and every student should be proud of the fact that he is a Sim
mons student. Many high school graduates will go to college next year
and you should give ever one'who is worthy to enroll for a college educa-
tion an invitation to attend Simmons.
ATHEISM PAMPHLETS
Weekly packages of the Baptist Standard and oilier Baptist papers
are received and distributed in the reading rodm of the library each week.
In contrast to these from time to time; literature of the American Associa-
tion for the Advancement of Atheism is received. Pamphlets are received
stuping that there is no God no Heaven no soul and no life after' death..
Such literature never "reaches the reading room but soon finds its level
among the trash in the waste basket.
NO MORE SIR WALTER RALEIGHS
By Edcar S. Keefe
There appeared in a local newspaper recently the picture of a woman
who had gone to the national women's headquarters in Washington to di-
rect the summer campaign for equal rights for women.
It would be better for women in general if that lady had gone to
Washington to seek for a return of the old time courtesy for women. The
day has past when aman will get up from his seat in a street car and allow
a woman to takp his place. Even in Abilene there is a sign in the elevators
of a down town office building "Gentlemen arc requested to keep thcir-
hata on."
r - -It-Is nt -T-nn'j frinlrthnt xiir.li n social change has come about. Women
have entered the business and the political sphere of activities and as a
consequence mem have been forced to trpat them in the same manner as
they would other men for with the cntranc of every woman there is a job
closed up to a man.
Women vote; they smoke and they do practically all the tilings that
men do. What then do they expect? If they go out to take fhe places
of men then treat them as men do each other.
No the lady is wrong in seeking equal rights. It will only serve to
lessen the. respect that men have for women and courtesy and politeness
to women will become a thing of the past.
This progress in equal Tights has spelled the doom ofnll the Sir
Walter Raleighs. 'here ore no more Sir Walters. A Sir Walter could not
exist today.

This and That
Backward and Forward
It is easy to look backward
And to see what might have been
But it's harder to start forward
With a heart in us again.
It's wrong to chide the present
For the obstacles we meet
And it's wrong to think tomorrow
Holds us aught but sure defeat.
Oh it's hard to see the present
By the light of sterner years
And iff hard to meet tho future
Without 'whimperings and fears.
But the man who looks the present
In the face without a blink
'And makes ready for tho future

COST OF GOVERNMENT
" . . AGENCIES. ESTIMATED
WASHINGTON D. 0 Tho cost qt
the government' for tho next fiscal
year has been set by President Hoover-
at approximately $3725000000.
The president through the Bureau
of the Budget has1 called upon all
spending agencies of' the government
to keep their estimates for the year
1931 within the limitations laid down
for the fiscal year 1030.
The bureau asked the' budget offices
of the several departments and
agencies to transmit to it a prelimi-
nary statement of their expected re-
quirements; not later than' July 15
and informed them of the president's
decision to restore to the heads of
such departments and' agencies the
full responsibility of preparation' of
their estimates so that they may come
within the grand total prescribed .
It was explained orally by thebu
reau that the praetiea heretofore fol
lowed of 'conducting hearings at
.which the spending ageneles could ex-
plain their programs would be ' en-
