Evidently somo kind of a spirit en
llvoner has struck tho Simmons stud-
onts within tho past ten dayo. Tho
Campus has exhibited marked . signs
of approaching tho poppy days that
woro so characteristic of it prior to
the ontry into tho war. Wo Bay kooii
it up; for a coUego without pop 19 an
abomination to tho student
Tho mombors of tho Toxas Intor-
Collcgiato Press Association aro par-
ticularly fortunato this year In having
Baylor play host to tho Association.
Baylor's reputation for doing things
in first class stylo assures tho dele-
gates to tho convention that they will
bo accorded a royal and profltablo
time.
The A. & 31. Gnmc.
That A. & M. came to Simmons and
then left in tho dlssatlsflod manner
that sho did is an incidont in her ath-
letic history that Is exceedingly re-
gretful to Simmons. Rnthor than have
had it occur Simmons would have pre-
ferred to havo missed tho opportunity
of defeating tho Aggies. If thero Is ono
thing which SlmmQns prides herself
upon it is tho ability to meet any of
her opponents on the field of athletics
and give them a "fight to tho finish"
whether it bo won or lost. After tho
splendid game which tho Agglo3 gavo
tho Cowboys their contesting of tho
referee's decision and their resulting
departuro fell llko a damper upon tho
-entire Simmons delegation.
Not for a moment though does Sim-
mons budgo from tho belief that sho
won tho gamo according to tho rules
and factB In tho case. If wo aro in-
formed correctly last year tho Aggies
lost tho state championship to Rice
under similar circumstances tho time-
keeper's gun falling to firo tho in-
stant time was up From A and M.'s
provious declaration that they woro
coming to dedicate the Marston Gym-
nasium Xor tho Cowboys; Coach Driv-
er's Insistence that tho alleged tlo bo
played off his later acceptance of
tho referee's decision; his departure
for Baylor with tho statement that ho
would havo a fresh team with which
tp meet tho Bears all lead ono to be-
lieve that ho attached a higher impor-
tance to the defeat of tho Baylor Bears
than ho did to tho risking of tho sec-
ond gamo with tho CowboyB.
As for being rough a gamo with
teams as evenly matched as tho two
were must necessarily bo a little
rough. Bradley's cracked shoulder and
tho bruised condition pf tho other Sim-
monB playprs Is amplo ovldence that
tho Aggies were not gentle themselves.
Simmons hopes that she will again
havo tho opportunity of bringing tho
Aggies to Abilene where they may rest
assured that they will bo received with
every hospitality.
MILDRED TAXTON WIN.
MNG HONORS AT STATE
When Mildred Paxton wont to Stato
U it was tho opinion of thoso who
know hor thai "Mildred would mako
good." At tho heart of all tho big
things in Simmons which took place
while Bho was a student hero one
finds traces of Mildred's work and
influonce. But her greatest interest
has always been contercd in press
work. Sho has collogo famo as a
short Btory writer and was editor of
tho first "Simmons Brand."
So it Isn't with so much surprise
Hb "with Just a good feeling of satis
faction that her friends hear of her
success at Stato University.
Sho has boon on tho "Toxan" staff
for several months and has had tho
distinction of having served as a
special reporter. Also sho has edited
tho "Co-eds" as "Eds" column. Need-
less to say these aro great honors
in fact tho editing of this column is
tho highest placo a girl can get on the
"Toxan."

DREAMS OF PEP.
By DICK BRANDON.
STUDENT'S COUNCIL
ARRANGES SEVERAL
All tho Hall wxis In a flurry.
Mystic makors wero aflame
With their plans for fun and frolic.
That would help to win tho gamo.
Our very fairest docked in costutno
Woro to march to Marpton gym
And thero with colorB as a teacher
To bring tho light to A. & M.
Not a moment would bo lagging
Thoy had planned with perfect care
Before tho first boforo tho second
Old Simmons' yolls would rend tho
air.
A purplo hazo of gleeful beauty
A streak of gold for vict'ry won
Would circle round a mimic Aggio
Represented all in fun.
By a Jolly Simmons cold
.Red and whlto from crown to solo
Running round In cosmic circles
And throwing not a single goal.
But BlghB and sobs aro now In order
Disappointment reigns supremo
All tho cherished plans aro done for
Tho hoped-for pep is but a dream.
Tho iron-clad hand of Proxy's will
Has Bquelched tho spirit of the
thing
Another schomo to rouse somo pep
Has mado a matron's door boll ring.

For tho past several years tho lit-
erary contests hold under tho uub-
plces of tho T. I. P. A. havo opened
an Interesting field for tho winning of
lltorary and Intellectual honors and
in this field Simmons has seldom
failed to share. This year owing to
tho smaller percent ot uppor classmen
the number of eptries in tho local
contest will probably bo fewer
but this will only increase the
chances of their carrying off tho
preliminary honors. While thero is
small material gain ten dollars for

Is a distinctive honor both to tho in
dividual and his collogo In having a
manuscript chosen as tho best produc-
tion of its kind submitted by the com-
peting schools. Tho rules and regu-
lations for tho preliminary contest aro
published in tho columns of this
paper. The Brand urges that tho
students read them and start immed-
iately upon the production of manu-

tors. Ho stated that tho T. I. P. A.
would hold its annual meeting UUs
year at Baylor on April 11th and 12th.
"Wo aro going to Bend delegates to
this convontlon" ho said "and Sim-
mons must win in somo of tho con-
tests. Baylor has cancelled her bas-
ketball games with us; Bho won over
our raw team in football. This makes
it tho more imperative that wo win
out in somo phaso of tho T. I. P. A.
contest. r
"It is a distinctive honor to tho
student and to his institution who wins
Last year Mis Mamio Goodnrght won
firBt placo for Simmons in tho short
story contest; and Claudo Lloyd sec-
ond placo in poem. Wo havo tho abil-
ity to do this again."
Then tho Bpeaker urged a more loy-

Tho first inter-clasa game of the
season will bo played betweon the
Juniors and Seniors. Soon after this
paper is off the presB ono gay bunch
of upper classmen will claim tho
championship of tho Balcony. Mem-
bers of both classes aro trying out
dally and somo roal stars aro being
"discovered." Whon it comes to walk-
ing grandstand plays a littlo foot-
ball on tho side and all tho other
"stuff" that goes with a winning
team tho two squads aro about equal
ly talented. Thero Is Hols of Senior
famo who can throw a goal from tho
centor of tho court with tho most of
"certainty." And thero is P. D. Q. of
Junior famo who counts to fifty bo-
foro ho would hit an opponont in tho
face to keep him from throwing a
goal. Tho other playors have tho
same vim and pep and all are going to
fight to tho finish.

THE 3LVRY-E. SOCIETY
Ono of tho most unique stunts ot
tho season was pulled by tho Mary-E's
