Robert and Mary Hall of Jasper have
offered ACU a challenge grant of
$150000 to help comaiete a cimprign to
endow a Chair of Psychology and Jmar-
culraral Studies annaanc4d ACU peasi
dam William Jt'Taaf. ' Z.
The three-year Campaign: to naW $1. 17
million began m April 1990. Whan the
goal is reached Dr. Clyde Austin profes-
sor of psychology will become the fkst
occupant of this chair.
The Halls are co-chairing the campaign
along with Dak and Rita Brown of Mid-
land. The couple from Jasper already had
contributed $225000 to help begin the
campaign in 1990.
Hall owner of Magnolia Investments
has been a member of the ACU Board of
Trustees since 1972.
Tcaguc announced the challenge to the
national steering committee for the cam-
paign: if they can raise the additional
$567000 to reach the goal the Halls will
give the $150000 gift to endow the chair.
The purpose of the new chair is to
advance understanding of the psychologi-
cal dimensions of missionary service and
the impact of the "international cycle" on
human behavior Austin said.
A former missionary Austin said the
cultural and occupational demand of liv-
ing overseas affects missionaries no less
than it docs corporate representatives and
government employees who work abroad.
Austin is studying ways to prevent psy
etiological problems throughout the time
on tite mission field.
Premature relocation can inflict emo-
tional scars on families for months or
years Austin said and no dollar value can
be placed on spiritual and psychological
costs.
However some corporate and church
officials have estimated the financial cost
for a premature relocation may run .as
high as $100000-$250000 he added.
