. Maybe .so btit it was a concern for
MM Jones professor of Spanish
and French when he visited Spain
this summer with a group of ACU
students.
"Sometimes I overdid that tricky
pronunciation and ended up
sounding like a hillbilly" Jones
said.
The nine students who
accompanied him on the summer
semester abroad didn't notice
though they were all relative
novices compared to the cultural
and verbal fluency of Jones in his
20th year of teaching.
"The reason wc took a trip to
Spain was that all of the students
needed to use their Spanish in
mingling With people" Jones sailH.
"There's nothing like travel to a
foreign land to increase a student's
desire to learn a language' he said.
"It's hard to be inspired while sitting
in u classroom everything seems
so artificial; yet when students sec
the practical side of a language and
do business with it they want to
learn more."
"Wc also went to have fun."
The scholarly cultural expedition
to Spain was the eighth student trip
Jones has escorted. His previous
summer excursions include
Honduras and Mexico.
A pragmatic polyglot Jones took
students to study abroad on the
Iberian Peninsula because he
believes cultural exposure increases
a student's grasp of foreign
language.
"Trips like this arc important
because they increase the desire to
communicate with people from
other cultures which is what the
study of language is all about"
Jones said.
Amy Bonifay senior English and
Spanish major from Kingwood had
a purely personal evaluation: "Spain
was really scary at first."
"It was very unusual to adjust to a
culture other than your own.
Feeling like a foreigner was also
difficult" she said. "I finally
understood how people feel when
they come here from another
country."

JLntcrcst in the trip originated
when Enrique' Martorcll
administrator of a small preaching
school in Madrid the capital of
Spain visited the campus last year
and talked with Jones about the
possibility of a summer in Spain for
students.
A distant prospect turned into
reality as a church m Fucnlabrada
predominately a commuting village
of 100000 outside Madrid offered
to house students.
"The one thing that stood out to us
all was the great hospitality in
Spain" Jones said. "They were
generous lavished us with
friendship."
In the six weeks students were
required to take six hours of study in
intermediate and upper level
Spanish with guided study for some
of the classes.
"It was easier to learn grammar
because I would hear something all
day long and then be studying at
night and think 'Wow I finally
understand what we've been talking
about all this-timc'said Lara
Uridgesmith junior Spanish major

"Examples surrounded me all the
time."
In addition lo learning a language
the group was able to lour such sites
as the Royal Palace and the National
Museum of Archaeology in Madrid
as well as make weekend jaunts to
Segovia Toledo and other cities. '
The troop attended bull fights saw
2000-year-old Roman aqueducts
climbed in castles and visited
several churches in the area.
In addition to Jones' lessons at the
assemblies the nine female students
formed a chorus and sang at the
worship services.
"The most exciting part of the trip
was getting to meet all of the
congregations there" said Lynda
Sharp graduate student of French
from Gallup N.M.
"They were all very open very
liberal" Sharp said. "Their songs
were culturally unique and they
don't sing melodies like wc do
they chanted their hymns. It was
very different."
Such experiences helped students
in their educational endeavors
Jones said.
"The whole group really
developed well. That is the reason I
