The "Falling Star was one of many ridos that brightened the AoKene sky during the West Toxas Fair and Rodeo In Abilene Sept. 615.
Putting on a fair
Tfaa barkers bark as be
walks by Muliof sometimes
mckarad lo the dtt booths
with hopes of winning a
pjupkpolki dotted toddy
beer for hkgkifrknd
Wafts of white powder on
the fiinael cake Ibe dirty
brown grease of the fajka
wagon and freeh dang and
say frost the stockyard fill
bis nostrils.
Ah the swells of fee West
Texas Fair and Rodeo.
A rough-looking character
m a tall hat passes by spitting
on the dkt of the midway
mumblkig to tlw woman
clinging to his tatooed arm.
Local high school Idds look
over black straw panama hats
with "Poison" across the
band and fondle cheap
jewelry with skulls and
balled-ap fists the
predominant themes.
The tall gawky rides
beckon bis girlfriend to ride
within tliek steel bellies
daring her to brave the wiry

slick motion of the grease-
salivating beasts.
The stifling heat of day
folds into itself and blooms a
cotton-candy-cool night
Red blue green and rusty
lights swirl in a flower burst
tickling their skin and
lighting up the dark air now
alive with the juice of
juvenile excitement.
He walks up to a basketball
booth where a sign overhead
reads "Every Child Wins A
Prizcr
People chatter anxiously
and brash past him through
the antimated midway as he
lands a ball in the basket.
He hands his girlfriend a
small blue frog with crusted
skin and they leave the
heavy gates and the burdened
walksof the fair with slow
remorse.
She tells a joke as he steps
on the Bonneville's
accelerator.
The fair has ended once
more.
