Chapel prayer
was needed to
help student
Last Tuesday night an ACU student wM
beaten and stabbed by two men From Tuesday
until Monday morning he was in the intensive
care unit and listed in serious condition at
Hendrick Medical Center. Monday he was listed
in stable condition.
Monday morning Norman Archibald
associate dean of students announced that an
ACU student was in Hendrick recovering from
surgery. A prayer was led for the student-and
two other members of the ACU community who
Were either sick or had a family member; In the
hospital.
Archibald who is responsible for pulling
together the Chapel announcements said the
decision not to announce the student's misfor-
tune was made because he believed the student
did not want the incident publicized.
We appreciate the fact that an announcement
and a prayer was made on the student's behalf
Monday morning. However with the exception
of a short story in the Optimist Friday and
several short stories in the Abilene Reporter-
News students have had no opportunity to learn
about what happened to one of their fellow
students for about a week.
It is common practice to pray in Chanel for
someone who k severely ill or who is involved in
some kind of accident. Any student who is in-
volved in an automobile accident needs our
prayers but a student who is stabbed in the
vicinity of a nightclub really needs bur prayers.
He needs our prayers throughout the physical
trauma and he needs our prayers to help him
overcome the embarrassment and guilt
associated with where the incident happened.
We recognize that certain sensitivities have to.
be taken into account but the student's name or
where he was stabbed didn't have to be an-
nounced. Either way the announcement and
request for prayers could have been made last
The ACU community: ha always pridd ihtylf
with the nickname "the ACU family"' and in.
most cases the warmth and love of this
university closely resembles that of a family.
However families make mistakes and not
announcing the misfortune of a "family"
member sooner was certainly a mistake that all
of us must work to prevent in the future.

War Powers Act
would interfere
in Mid-East policy
. Vietnam has become a nasty word. It carries
with it the perception of young Americans
fighting a war in a corner of the world where
they didn't belong.
Last week the Democratic Senate Caucus
voted to ask Congress to invoke the War Powers
Act to get the Marines out of Lebanon. However
the White House has said it will fight any such
move.
The War Powers Act of 1973 was passed im-
mediately after the Vietnam conflict to make
sure Congress would have a voice in the
initiation and escalation of an "undeclared"
war. Under terms of the law President Reagan
would have to justify the Marine 'presence in
Lebanon or begin troop withdrawal in 60 days.
After the SO day period Congress would have to
approve the troop presence every 90 days.
Although the Reagan administration may have
made an error in sending the Marines to

Letters to the Editor
"Mr. Mom" is rated PG and is showing ntthe
vUA Cinema Six in the Mall of Abilene. If you
eniov good stories you shouldn't miss th
movie.
Wait a minute! A movie review in an edltoria
' column? . '
Yeah kind of at lesst. However I'd rather
spend time reviewing the theme of "Mr. Mom"
and skip over the technical details of the movie.
Unfortunately movies today are usually filled
with sex violence slash-and-gash horror or
something else that appeals to the prurient in-
terest of an individual. "Mr. Mom" missed nut
on those ingredients somewhere along the way
and it comes off as a better movie for Uie ex
perience.
"Mr. Mom" features an incident in the life of t
happily married couple. He loses his job and shir
goes to work to keep the bills paid. Michael
Keaton does a great job as the bread-winner
turned housekeeper and the story provides a
light lock at some of the more humorous parts of
the day.
But this movie does more than tell a story and
make the audience laugh. "Mr. Mom" teaches a
lesson that most of us should re-learn everyday;
"Remember the things that are really im-
portant." Importance is sometimes tough for the college
student to judge. It's important to study but itftb
probably more important to take a break and gisP
to church. It's also important for college
students to date but it's important to keep old
friends along with the new.

other side of the world planes to get us across
the oceon in a matter of hours and computers to
help us process information faster than ever
before. Sometimes the line between what is
important and what is urgent is tough to drawm
but it's up to the individual to remember th
difference between importance and urgency.
The real important things in life take time.
They don't happen overnight but are a more
gradual event. Whether it's a baby learning to
walk or a friend deciding to change his life those
things are usually worth waiting for.
Urgent things are usually done just to keep up
or to not fall too far behind. They don't take long
but can get in the way of working on the long-
term. Here is a suggestion to divide urgency and
importance Today while you're in a hurry stop
and say something nice to someone that yoifjf
know pretty well or maybe someone you haven't
even seen before.
Sound stupid? Then maybe you've forgotten
what is really important which should be
helping each other enjoy life a little more.
To the Editor:
Being astudent of ACU a freShman.a faithful
reader and also what you refer to as a Yankee I
would like to respond to your recent Grassroots
article.
After reading this article for the third time I
was still amazed such a piece of prejudiced
material would appear in our campus
newspaper. But to add to this in the creditations
it shows the author of this article also happens to
be the editor of the Optlmitt. I have come to
learn that even in opinionated columns there is
.some responsibility and care to be taken on the
journalists part as to not offend or insult innocent
people.

To the Editor:
It seems to me that as a result of your mundane
opinion page lacking any journalistic volatility
and no current campus controversies polarizing
the student body you have elected to create the
news rather than report it Please consider this
letter a friendly response to the ramblings from
your alleged mind about Southerners and
Yankees.
