A monument dedicating a site on the side
of the highway between Seguin and San
Marcoa is scheduled to be erected in late
April. It will not mark the site of a great
battle or the home of a famous person; this
monument will make history as well as
paying homage to it.
A 7-foot cross and an 8-by-10 planter will
mark this special spot and upon the cross
will be placed a large plaque which rcadsr
Eddie Prude age 26 was killed Feb. 4.
1911 near this ilte by a drunk driver.
Eddie was an example of work character.
Integrity and love for his fellow man. HI
mother father and titter dedicate this
monument to hit life and memory.
This monument will be the First of Its
kind in Texas and it may be looked upon
as a symbol of the public's growing
awareness of the problems caused b
drunk driving.
Last year more than 26000 people were
killed in accidents involving drunk
drivers. More people have been killed In
such accidents in the past two years than
in the entire Vietnam War.
Several organizations have been formed
with the goal of making the community
more aware of the problems and of helping
prevent this highway slaughter but the

one that has received the most attention so
far has been Mothers Against Drunk
Drivers (MADD).
This group was organized in 1980 by
Candy Lightner whose 13-year-old
daughter was killed by a drunk driver in
Pair Oaks Calif. The driver had three
previous drunk driving arrests and was
out of Jail on bond because he had been
arrested for another drunk driving crash
just two days before.
In less than three years 115 MADp
chapters have been established in 34
states. Betty Prude organized a Taylor
County chapter last August after her son
Eddie was killed.
Prude described the Feb. 4 1981 In-
cident which prompted her to become
involved with MADD.
That night Eddie ran out of gas as he was
driving on the highway between Seguin
and San Marcos lie pulled his pickup
truck into the ditch so that he was about
eight feet from the highway then hiked to
a nearby house and called to ask a friend to
bring some gas.
Dale came to Eddie's rescue and the
two men filled the fuel tank. Then Dale
returned to his car while Eddie moved to
the front of the the pickup to pour some gas
directly into the carburetor.
As he sat there. Dale noticed a car

for drunk driving
speeding down the left-hand side of the
road The driver attempted to pull the car
back into the right lane but instead he
angled off the road into the ditch where
Eddie's truck was parked.
The car hit the truck in two places then
struck Dale's car jamming the door.
When Dale finally managed to get out of
the car he rushed to the pickup but Eddie
was dead. His pickup had been knocked 150
feel from its original position by the im-
pact of the accident.
The driver a 21-ycar-oId senior at Texas
Lutheran College had a blood alcohol
content of .20 percent. In Texas a person is
considered legally intoxicated if his blood
alcohol content is .10 percent. The driver
was charged with involuntary man-
slaughter and seven months later was
given a three-year probated sentence and
fined $2000.
"I asked the District Attorney how this
sentence was determined and he told me
that it was what they usually give to
someone who didn't have a record of
DWI" Prude said.
She said she had not heard of MADD at
the time of her son's death but told her
husband a few days after the incident that
she was going to do something to stop these
senseless deaths. About three .weeks later
