'with his work and to be out until 10:30 on Tuesday and
Thursday nights. 2. To have social privileges on Tuesday

Today we give three cheers for the four extra days
of Christmas vacation.
Cheer No. 1: for the spirit of good will which made
possible the correction of the error in scheduling the
holidays;
Cheer No. 2: for the enthusiasm and hard work
evident on the campus in anticipation of the holidays;
Cheer No. 3: for' the merry happiness and deep re-
freshment we can gain from this season of giving.

SERIOUSLY . . .
WrUer Discusses
Preachers' Role:
To Define Death
Br MILTON COPELAND
Death ...
A beloved professor and friend
died last week; and we ressurrect
old though ts: death its meaning
and how to express this meaning.
Can it be done?
Roger's Thesaurus lists syno-
nyms: "death demise dying dis-
solution departure release debt
of nature rest eternal rest; ces-
sation (loss or extinction) of life;
loss bereavement; river of death;
Jordon Jordan's bank Stygian
shore; crossing the bar (Tenny-
son); the great adventure." And
all of these are descriptive but
none help fill
the void In the
heart of a griev-
ing wife or child.
Great men have
spoken: Eurl-
p i d e s "Who
knows but life
be that which
mc call death
and death what
men call life"?; Channlng. "Did
any man at his death ever regret
his conflicts with himself his vic-
tories over appetite his scorn of
Impure pleasure or his sufferings
for righteousness' sake"?; Charles
Frohman. "Why fear death? It Is
the most beautiful adventure in
this is profound but pro-
fundity scarcely ever dries tears.
If death be adventure reconcile-
ment to life or even life itself it
is still separation and sorrow. Per-
haps this is because life itself is
so often sorrow;
The preacher's role is sot an
envied one. thai role of dols
better than the dictionary or
profound jmb. -And yet -
must try. So. he talks about
the dbrUiora of life: here and
hereafter. Death whoa linked
to life here. U tad lie may tay
but when linked to life here-
after. It may be Tory happy.
For. 'the other tide of the door
of . death -is -resurrection. -To
Christian people comes the im-
ploring cry. "Sorrow not. eren
as the rest who hare no hope."
This seems to help more than
other approaches. Yes it is from
a book; but the Bible is not a
mere book to theorize on death.
It shows the way through it! It
eases the shock from it! It lifts
the load of it!
StilL we cry. But is it because
he went or perhaps because we
cannot all go together?

This week's safety edition is the result of hours of plan-
ing and hard work.
We received information several weeks ago about an an-
nual safety contest sponsored by a large insurance company.
This contest precedes the Christmas holidays with the hope
of convincing a few college students that it is wise to drive
safely on the way home.
Competition comes from college papers all over the
country. First prize brings in $500 second $250 and third
$100. Then there are individual prizes for best feature best
editorial best cartoon etc. Tho Optimist plans to enter most
of these contests working on the philosophy "You can't win
if you don't try."
But regardless of wholher wo win or not our efforts
will be rewarded if wo oncourago just one person to "take
It easy" with his driving.
And that's just what we especially as college studenta
need to do take it easy. The fast pace we maintain all through
the year could be harmful in several ways but around Christ
mas we always notice our "edgy" nerves looking for a release
through the automobile. Let's all "take it easy" on the way
home while we're at home and then return safely.
"Drive carefully the life you save may be mine!"
And now Christmas greetings:
To our roommate You poor freshman you're a pretty
good guy. Merry Christmas!
To our girl friend (s) I'm gonna miss you during
the holiday but "Oh well." Merry Christmas!
To our teachers Miss you too. Merry Christmas!
To our photographer (the man who never was) We
hope Santa Claus brings you 'cause it sure does bind us. -without
you Merry Christmas!
To our printer The man who works long hours putting
out The Optimist Merry Christmas!
To our staff Whose only pay is the "By line" Merry
Christmas!
Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas -
to the Hill and all its inhabitants!
The hill is tall and the view is good but it is only as tal
as the hearts of its people.
