wireless Internet
in fall semester
By Josh Horton
YJ ilchtor
Howard I.i nc plans lo
add wireless Intcnict at several
plates on lainpus by the tall
semester Clarence I othergill
said that several ol the main
areas include the Malice Center
the library and the dorms
"We're hoping to get it
done over the summer so it's
done by Kill but it will depend
on time. mone and manpow-
er." I othergill said "My initial
plans are to do the hbrar and
hopelully at least two or three
aieas in the Mabee Center (the
taleteria rambrough's and the
Uullion Suites) Hie other m.un
.irea is the first llwr ol every
donn We'll complete the cover
age in Winebrenner and lully
enable Phelps fli.it may change
b.ised on budget but that's our
grand plan "
"With the wireless access I log
onto the network every time that 1
use the laptop. "
-Name Dr. Dennis Horton technology com-
mittee membet
Dr Dennis I lotion mem-
ber ot the technology committee
said that wireless could bo an
asset lor students
"II students have laptops
with wireless capability they
will be able to use a code lo
access the Internet in those
buildings" Horton said "We
believe that this could bo a real
asset lor students doing research
in the library or simply wauling
to Mir! the net while hav tng a cup
ol java at I ambrough's"
I othergill said that many
newer notebooks are already
equipped lor wireless hill that
older notebooks might require
an upgrade.
"II the notebook is rela-
tively new it may come with
wueless built in a lot ol them
do" I othergill said "In the
event that it doesn't have wire-
less network card the student
will have to purchase one. We
will probably carry those in the
computer center to help students
acquire those and install them
lor a small lee."
Right now there is no
scheme in place lor giving stu-
dents access However
I othergill said thai several ideas
are Iving considered
"We haven't really deter-
mined type ol security but
Iheie'll be some sort ol security

patio ol the President's Homo. Dr.
and Mrs Linny Hall the Junior

"I am excited to see how all
ol our hard work will come to
Iruilion" viul Jonathan Mores
junior class representative and
student Nxly president-elect lor
2X)4-2(X)5 "nns is going to be a

'Hie team ol llorcs along
to authenticate with a pass-
word." lothergill said "It may
well be that students h ive to log
in with a normal usemame and
passwonl "
Cunuilly. the only place
that wireless is used on campus
is in the Phelps building
"We do have a wireless
access xmt in Phelps but it is
specifically designated lor one
ol our mobile teaching plallomis
that we use in the Phelps class
looms." I lotion said
lie added that wireless
olleis a number ol advantages
over vviied Internet
"lliere are some definite
advantages lo going wireless"
Horton said ' I reedom and con-
venience aie certainly at the top
ol the list lo ho able to seaicii
the net without being lied lo an
Internet conneclion in the wall is
liberating Such lieedom and
convenience will translate into
much more Internet usage in the
library and classiooms "
However wireless will not
only Ivnefit students but is use-
lul lor tacully and si. ill as well
"Before we got our wire-
less access in Phelps ... I rarely
logged onto the Internet w tth our
mobile leaching unit even
though the plug was only a leu
leet away." Horton said 'Willi
the wireless access I log onto
the netwoik every time that I use
the laptop I he advantage is that
I can go to a website easily dur
ing a lecture il needed Alter
class I can log into Wacklxiaril
immediately il a student has a
question about grades or assign-
ments "
However. Horton said that
there are several disadvantages
lo wireless access
'On the down side stu
dents would also lie able to surl
the web lor unrelated inlonua-
lion and play web based video
games during the lectures"
lloiion said "I've known pio-
tessors at olhei schools who
have loi bidden the use ol laptops
in their classes lor this very rea-
son Overall. I believe that the
advantages ol adding wireless
capabilities to our campus will
outweigh the disadvantages
Both the students and the pioles
sors will benefit "
