Roomchecks knocking on the door
BYREBEKAHLAWSON
YJ Staff Writer
Howard Payne University
instituted a new policy on dorm
room checks this year. Since the
beginning of the semester resi-
dent assistants have been required
to check all dorm rooms once a
week bringing any issues of
cleanliness or safety to the stu-
dent's attention.
While these weekly room
checks have become routine
many students continue to ques-
tion the new policy's necessity
and some remain uncertain of the
policy's exact regulations.
The purpose of the inspec-
tions is to ensure a safe and
healthy atmosphere for all resi-
dents. Dr. Athena Bean dean of
students said that she initiated
room checks after reviewing the
HPU Student Handbook over the
summer.
The Handbook states that
university agents and personnel
have the right to inspect students'
rooms for health and safety rea-
sons. "We thought that it was a
good idea to actually implement
what was in the handbook" said
Bean. Bean said that room checks
are standard practice at other uni-
versities and have been done at
HPU in the past.
She said that scheduling the
inspections for a certain day and
time each week makes the checks
more convenient for students.
Bean said that the RAs are
looking to sec that the rooms are
generally clean and sanitary and
that the purpose of room inspec-
tions is not to force students to
adhere to a rigid set of rules.
When asked to specify
what the RAs looked for Bean
replied:
"General neatness. That
you don't have things strewn all
over the floor and that your trash
isn't over flowing. That can be a
safety hazard" said Bean con-
cerning what they RAs look for
when going in a room.
Bean said that students may
expect a warning if their rooms
arc not reasonably clean but that
no harsh punishments will be
handed down.
"Theis aren't going to be
any punitive consequences" said
Bean "They'll get a notice about
what needs to be straightened up.
Students are expected to keep
clean and orderly rooms."
Many residents at Veda
Hodge Hall are upset about the
recommendation that all beds
should be made up for room
checks particularly since no such
policy exists in Jennings and
Taylor Halls. Some students have
confused the recommendation
with a mandatory command.
Bean said that making beds is
encouraged to give the room a
more presentable appearance and
is not meant to be an unfair
requirement forced on Veda resi-
dents. Bean said that she received
some negative comments regard-
ing room checks at the beginning
of the school year but that she
hasn't had any feedback recently.
She said that she does not want
room checks to be resented or
feared.
"I think that students need
to understand that it's not sup-
posed to be heavy handed" said
Bean "I hope that they will look
at it in a positive manner."

Tucker
said that the
open-ended title
of the composi-
tion holds a
double meaning
and significance
for himself and Stern.
"I wrote the piece and titled
it "In Pursuit Of..." because we
were both pursuing our doctor-
ates at the time" said Tucker " I
also felt that my friend was
always looking for something
but never finding it. It's very
unsettling very high energy and
rhythmic with a hint of the
bizarre."
Dr. Allen Reed dean of the
school of music and fine arts has
called Tucker a "prolific compos-
er." Tucker said that he has writ-
ten many pieces in the past and
has had two published.
Tucker said that he has
been met with considerable suc-
cess in his more recent work

University's Acapella Choii will

Tucker's com

concert on

The piece is
based on Psalms
120 and 121.
Mr. Monte
Garret choral
director coin-
missioned Tucker to write
the piece.
"It's called
'Deceit and
Preservation'.
Psalms 120 and
1 2 1 are very
opposite in atti-
tude. The deceit
is in 120 and the
preservation in 121" said
Tucker. "The piece is very angry
and then very positive. It's a ery
difficult piece of music."
Tucker said that no more
performances of his work have
been planned outside of HPU
but his composition "Call of
Significance" has been per-
formed in several places.
He also has aspirations for
musical accomplishments in the
future and said he would like to
compose an operetta.
"I write music because it's
in me to write" said Tucker.
"Whenever you create some-
thing you bare part of yourself. I
want what I write to be an impact
in some way."
