Whitis Named
Jacket Coach
Former HPC Star Resigns From Coleman
High To Accept Head Basketball Post
By NORMAN FISHER
Glen Whitis former Howard Payne basketball star and
head cage coach at Coleman High School for the past two
years will become basketball coach at Howard Payne Col-
lege effective August 1 according to an announcement
Wednesday afternoon by Guy B. Gardner college athletic
director.
Whitis notified Coleman
his resignation at the end of the
current school year. He will be
on the Howard Payne campus to
conduct spring cage drills how-
ever. Plans for the practice sessions
are not complete as yet.
In two years as head cage skip-
per for the Bluecats Whitis di-
rected his teams to two district
titles a bi-district championship
and 50 victories in 57 games. His
1953-54 team was classed by
many observers as one of the
best to ever represent Coleman
on the court.
The Bluecats' didn't lose a con-
ference fame either season a feat
seldom successful m hectic school-
boy cage races.
Of Whitis' resignation Terrell
Graves superintendent of the
Coleman school system said "We
regret to lose Whitis very much
but wish him success in the col-
lege coaching field."
Raymond Shipman president of
the school board said it will like-
ly be sc vei al weeks before a suc-
cessor is named.
Before replacing Nat Gleaton
now cage coach at Abilene High
as Coleman mentor Whitis coach-
ed at Pyote and Monahans.
Whitis lettered four years in
basketball at Howard' Payne nail-
ing down all-Texas Conference
honors twice. He was captain of
the squad one year and led the
loop in scoring in 1950.
His 438 points for that season
lacked only 10 points being the
best mark for a college eager in
the state. Whitis missed two
games late in the season because j
of illncs after pacing the scoring
race for several weeks.
Whitis replaces Bennie Wil-
liams as Yellow Jacket Basketball
coach. Williams served as tempo-
rary cage mentor this year in ad-
dition to his regular duties as
football assistant coach and scout
and mathematics instructor.
Whitis will also be physical ed-
ucation instructor at the college
in addition to his basketball
duties.

The Yellow Jackets depending
mostly on freshmen and sopho-
mores this year won only six
of 24 games. Six lettermen in-
cluding three regulars will re-
turn next season.
One of the lettermen Fresh-
man Charles Clary played under
Whitis at Coleman High in the
1953-54 season. Another freshman
letterman Starter Robert Moore
is the younger brother of Herman
Moore who starred for the Jack-
ets at the same time Whitis did.
Herman and Whitis each won
all-conference honors twice.
Robert was the leading Stinger
scorer this season and a member
of the first all-conference team.
Though spring practice plans
are incomplete Whitis expects to
form them in the near future.
'Of course I don't know
many of the boys and they
don't 'know me." Whitis re-
marked Wednesday afternoon
as he discussed his new position

THE BIG sports news around
the campus is old by now but it
just must be mentioned. We join
with everyone else in welcoming
the newest member of the coach
ing stall Glenn (The Hook)
n:t:s
He made quite a name for him-
self when he hooked 'em in for
the Jackets a few years back
and lias added to that name wth
a colorful if brief coaching ca-
reer. The most recent triumphs came
at Coleman where his teams won
games in two years there.
THE STEP we believe is a
big one tor the Jackets. The col-
lege needs a full-time cage men-
tor. Don't misunderstand we have
more than ordinary respect for
Coach Bennie Williams who
hancued the choies this year.
t But. it is reailv unfair to ask one
person to coach football and bas-
ketball on the le'cl which it must
1 be coached here.
All that in addition to teaching
some courses.
Coach Williams finished up the
football season this year just in
time to take over the basketball
1 team. About a week after the

That's too much for anyone to un-
dertake. We believe that everyone who'
knows Coach Williams will agree
that he is about the best hand at
figuring out a defense to stop
other fotball teams in this sec-
tion of the grid world. But there
is a limit to what one can do
you know.
THE NEW CAGE COACH
won't exactly be coming to a
strange place. In addition to carv-
ing himself a niche in the HP
cage immortals' hall Whitis is
married to a former Brownwood
girl. His sister is the wife of Dr.
Joe B. Rushing dean of our grad-
uate school.
And Charles Clary freshman
standout on the cage crew this
year played under Whitis in high
school. Robert Moore too is the
younger brother of Herman
Moore cage star in his own rights
who made the all-Texas Confer-
ence both times Whitis did.
YOL HAVE I am sure made
your plans to be at the game
Saturday night. That is about all
that needs to be said because any
squares who haven't heard there
is a football game Saturday night
probably won't wake up in time
to go anyway.
Let's back the Jackets.
