VARIED PROFESSIONS PRESENT ON FOCUS WEEK TEAM
Various professions will
be represented when twelve
well-known leaders will be
on the HPC campus for
Christian Focus Week. They
will lead in seminar discus-
sions chapel services and
dormitory meetings all dur-
ing the week.
Dr. Wallace H. Shamburger
born and reared in Fort Worth
attended Texas Wesleyan College
there for three years after which
he attended Baylor University in
Waco from which he was gradu-
ated with the AB degree in June
of 1940.
Dr. Shamburger is also a gradu-
ate of Baylor University College
of Medicine from which he holds
an MD degree.
Having surrendered for full-
time mission service while still in
college he applied with his wife
the former Jean Sternenberg of
Dallas for an appointment by
the Southern Baptist foreign mis-
sions board. They were not ap-
pointed however due to physical
reasons.
Following two years as resident
physician at City-County Hospital
he practiced medicine in general
practice in Dallas from 1949 to
1951. Dr. Shamburger then moved
to his present location Pharr.
H. Othal Feather born in Co-
manche. Okla. attended Okla-
homa A&M College and gradu-
ated from Oklahoma Baptist Uni-
versity with an AB degree in 192G.
He holds a master of religious ed-
ucation degree from Southwestern
Baptist Theological Seminary in
Fort Worth where at present he
is an applicant for doctor of reli
gious education degree.
Since 1947 he has been professor
of religious education at the semi-
nary. Mr. Feather served the follow-
ing churches as youth director ed-
ucation director or minister of ed-
ucation and student secretary
since 1927: First Baptist church
Shawnee Okla. 1927-31; First
Baptist church Wichita Kan.
1931-34; First Baptist church St.
Joseph Mo. 1934-35; First Bap-
tist church Austin Texas 1935-
43; and First Baptist church of
Springfield Mo. 1943-44.
Ross Coggins received a bache-
lor of arts degree from Baylor
University in 1948. He also holds
a bachelor of divinity degree from
Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary Fort Worth where he
has done graduate work.
His classwork toward a doctor
of philosophy degree has been
completed.
In the past he was pastor of the
First Baptist church Woodson
Texas and student director and
Bible chair leader at Texas State
College for Women Denton from
1951 to 1953.
At the present he is associate
director of the Texas state depart-
ment of student work Dallas. He
assumed the position in 1953.
He is married and is the father
of a year-old daughter.
Dr. E. F. Hallock holds an AB
decree received in 1914 from Ot-
tawa University and a doctor of
philosophy degree from Rochester
Theological Seminary.
He has served as pastor in Pitts-
burg Kan. and Nowata. Okla.
For the past thirty years he has

Harold Riley received his de-
gree from Baylor University in
1951. His major was business ad-
ministration. Honors he received while a stu-
dent at Baylor included election
to Who's Who in American Col-
leges and Universities; lettering
four years in football; naming to
the All-Southwest Conference
football team in 1950 and 1951.
He received honorable mention
for All-American in 1951.
Before becoming assistant foot-
ball coach at Plainview high
school where he is presently situ-
ated he was football coach at
Crane high school.
Dr. Herbert Howard was born
July 20 1917 in the city of Troy
Ala. He attended elementary and
high school and two years in Troy
State College.
He transferred in 1936 to How-
ard College in Birmingham and
graduated with a BA degree in
1938.
Dr. Howard was licensed to
preach in 193G and held his first
pastorate in Ramer Ala. in 1933.
He was ordained by the First Bap-
tist church at Troy Sept. 8. 1938.
He entered Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary in Louis-
ville. Ky.. in the fali of 1938. In
October of the same year he be-
came pastor of the Wallaceton
Baptist Church. Tate's Creek As-
sociation. Ky.
He received his doctorate of
theology degree at the seminary
in May 1944. His major was in
Christian sociology.
He went as pastor to Park Cities
Baptist church Dallas in Febru-
ary 1948. He is still there.
Dr. W. F. Howard holds the AB
degree with majors in science and
English from Baylor University;
the MA degree with major in
English from the University of
Texas and the LLD degree from
East Texas Baptist College.
Dr. Howard has taught in the
English department of Baylor
University has been on the facul-
ty of Southwestern Baptist Theo-
logical Seminary. Fort Worth;
worked as educational director of
Seventh and James Baptist church
in Waco and is presently secre-
tary of the department of student
work with the Baptist General
Convention of Texas a position he
has held for ten years.
In the summer of 1949 the Bap-
tist students of Texas gave Dr.
Howard a trip to Europe where
he attended the Baptist World
Youth Conference.
As a home life counselor Mrs.
Frank H. Leavell is qualified by
experience training and convic-
tion. Daughter of Dr. A. U. Boone of
Memphis long-time Baptist pas-
tor. Mrs. Leavell was reared in a
Christian home. With her hus-
band the late world-renowned
student leader she built a choice
Christian family.
Martha Boone Leavell is a gra-
duate of Shorter College of Rome.
Ga.. and has done graduate work
at Peabody College. As an author
she has made a distinctive contri-
bution in her field through her
book.'-. "Building a Christian
Home' and "The Eternal King."
Mrs. Leave believe-.' that the
home should be definitely related
to the church in its Bible teach-
ing training and missionary min-
istries. She therefore promotes
Christian home building which is
integrated with church organiza-
tions. Mrs. Leavell works under the
auspices of the Southern Baptist
Convention through the Sunday
school board's home curriculum
department.
Edward Newlon Jones Texas
Tech's sixth president is a native
of Kansas but has spent his pro-
fessional life in the Lone Star
State.
He was born April 15 1899 in
Downs Kan. and graduated from
Ottawa University Ottawa Kan.
in 1921. He was a graduate assis-
tant and fellow in botany at the
State University of Iowa from
1921 to 1925 and was granted the
Ph. D. degree from that university
in 1925.
Dr. Jones became head of the
department of botany at Baylor
in 1925 starting his academic ca-
reer in Texas. He became head of
the department of biology when
the two departments were com-
bined in 1933. He was named dean
of arts and sciences at Baylor in
1934 and then served as dean oi
the university from 1939 to 1942.
The tall administrator was
made president of the Texas Col-
lege of Arts and Industries Kings-
villc in 1942 and served in that
position until becoming vice pres-
ident in charge of academic ad-
ministration at Texas Tech in
1948. He was promoted to presi-
dent of Tech Sept. 1 1952 to be-
come the sixth president of the
27-year-old college at Lubbock.
