• And I newer see my old friend’s
| face—
j For life is«e swift and terrible
I race. . *
Tomorrow,” I say. ‘I will call on
Jim,
Just to show that I’m thinking of
him.’
But tomorrow comes and tomor-
row goes
i And the distance between us
grows and grows—
Around the corner! Yet miles
away . . .
‘Here’s a telegram, sir,’ . . . ‘Jim
died today.’
And that's what we get and
deserve in tire end—
Around the corner, a vanished
friend.”—C 11 Towne.
True friends are so rare and
life is so short, that the sud-
den loss of a congenial cam-
panion is a shocking blow.
This most precious asset of life
—true friendship—should be
nurtured and conserved and
enjoyed before it is too late.
Some use the word friend
loosely to mean any acquaint-
ance. Sometimes it means a
customer. Too often the po-
litician uses it to mean any-
body who will vote for him.
We should not profane the
lofty word with any such sor-
did sense of self-seeking.
To me, the word friend
means someone whose com-
panionship cheers and de-
lights me; whose tastes are
like mine; whose soul leaps
out to mine through under-
standing eyes; who can differ
with me and still like me; who
seeks nothing from me but
my good will and respect and
to whom 1 accord to same de-
ference; who would help me
if 1 needed r but who knows
I seek no advantage from him;
who can sit with me in mel-
low silence without the neces- j
sity of talking; who knows all
about my i ■<’’ and frailties PAUL MATTHKWS, Minister
