Representatives Attend
SW Theater Conference
HPC representatives James
McClain Effie C. Fairweather
and Bob Burton attended the
Southwest Theater Conference at
Texas Christian University Oc-
tober 26 and 27.
Highlight of the Conference
was TCU's Little Theater presen-
tation of a modern-dress version
of an ancient Greek legend of a
woman who fell in love with her
step-son. To this world premiere
staging of "Phaedra" Friday night!
came an audience of delegates
and critics.
Playwrights Joel Turner and
Roland Von Weber of New York'
tackled a difficult problem in
transposing a bit of ancient lore
into a modern setting. It was a
difficult play to present. Authors
and cast and particularly Direc-
tor Walter R. Volback. rate a

duct our representatives say. A
round-table discussion of the play
was led by Paul Baker Baylor
after the performance. The play-
wrights and several newspaper
reporters made up the panel.
Incidental music was composed
especially for the production by
TCU musician Andy Patterson
who holds the master's degree in
music theory from TCU and is
looking forward to a doctorate.
The overture sets the tragic mood
of the play then changes to a
festive style. The music was
played last week by the TCU
Symphony Orchestra under the
direction of Ralph Guenther and
recorded for use with the play.
At the closing session of this
conference a resolution was pass-
ed by Little Theater and college
groups of five states suspending
affiliation with the American Na-
tional Theater and Academy until
the organization centered in New
York specifies a program for the
regional theater Mrs. Fairweath-

Once more Howard Payne is
faced with her annual toss-up
with McMurry for gridiron glory.
The event is one of considerable
merit around II.P.C. campus with
the week of November 5 through
10 designated by the Student
Council the Jacket Co-eds and
the Cheerleaders as "Beat Mc-
Murry: Week."
Saturday evening November
10 the climax of a week's activi-
ties will occur in Abilene when
Howard Payne's fiery eleven kick
off to McCyry for the traditional
tussel for varsity fame.
"Beat McMurry! Week" has as
its ultimate aim the arousing or
reawakening of that good old
Howard Payne spirit which re-
cently went into hiding.
The II Club will be selling
"Beat McMurry!" ribbons which
every good Howard Payne lad and
lassie are expected to wear. The
price for the ribbons is ten cents.
Pennants will alsb go on sale
Monday November 5.
Posters will cover the hallowed
ivie walls of Howard Payne's ad-
ministration building throughout
the week and all freshmen are
' expected to sport signs with the
immortal traditional words "Beat
McMurry!"
I And should a stranger visit
this campus during this famous
week he should wonder at the
sanity of the student body bc-
I cause it is the rule that instead of
saying "Hello" "How are you?"
"Hi!" or "Rcet!" on meeting a
friend everyone is to say "Beat
McMurry!" Probably though the
visitors would soon find himself
in the swing of things shouting
"Beat those Indians! Beat 'em
black and blue!"
So that more H.P.C. students
can go along for the fun a bus
is being chartered for the trip.
For reservations students should
see either Ronnie Cox or Joe Em-
brey cheerleaders.
With the McMurry tussel the
biggest game of the year next to
the traditional Thanksgiving toss-
up with A.C.C. every student is
expected to do his part in cheer-
ing the team on to victory and
college varsity fame which is
fleeting but oh so wonderful!
BEAT McMURRY
The Yellow Jacket staff feels that Howard Payne has
come a long way this year toward building up that 'ol H.P.C.
spirit.
All hearts have thrilled over and over again as our boys
have showed more and more that they do have in addition
to a good coaching staff one who scores us not in points but
in how we play the game. We feel that "That Good Old How-
ard Payne Line" has ranked very high on His score book this
year. We also feel that the student's support has had a good
deal to do with it. The Jackets have realized that the student
body is backing them all the way and they have not shirked
their duty once.
Let's double our efforts in backing them this "Beat Mc-
Murry Week." Tell the boys you're counting on their win-
ning the game. Let them know that YOU are behind them
ALL the Way.
This will be a wonderful year for Howard Payne if we
win the Texas Conference. We can win if we want to enough!
If we will let God coach us every step have faith put all our
spirit behind our boys WE WJLL WIN CONFERENCE THIS
YEAR ! !
There is onlv one thing left to say;
BEAT McMURRY

Let's Go Jackets! Sting those McMurry Indians!
