Job fair
Area businesses seek
help
By Kathy Colvett
Copy Editor
About 350 people came closer to
obtaining jobs with 40 businesses
Tuesday during the first career fair at
the Abilene Civic Center.
Jack Stewart director of Career
Services at ACU said although most
businesses represented at tiic fair were
from the Abilene area some were
from cities such as Big Spring Fort
Worth and Dallas. These businesses
had a broad range of positions to fill
including clerical administrative
sales management and professional
jobs lie said adding that many busi-
nesses interviewed applicants at the
fair.
Stewart said the purpose of the
career fair was "to expose the job-
seekers in Abilene regardless of
whether they're graduating from one
of the institutions or just looking for a
job to opportunities available."
Teal Pcmbcrton employment coor-
dinator for human resources at Hen-
drick Medical Center said most of the
guests at the fair were university stu-
dents although some came from
Dycss or were looking for second
careers.
Pcmbcrton 1986 ACU graduate
said the openness of the people who
visited the Hcndrick Medical Center
display was impressive. She said
many visitors were not shy about
explaining that they had no experience
ri.-k
in a health-related profession but
wanted to learn what was available
While discussing opportunities with.
fair attendees Pcmbcrton said shVp
emphasized the Importance of nef-l(
working and internships because th6
more often a person Is exposed to
potential employers and positions thc(
morc.jlkcly that person will be to.
obtain n job. Researching jobs and j
potential career situations is also vital
she added. ' .j
The current job market has reduced -r
the necessity for many companies b't
actively recruit employees because '
people seeking jobs contact the corri'
panics first to indicate employment
interest Pcmbcrton said.
"Why would you go out and spend'
money when you have a pool of peo-'.
pie who arc coming to you?" Pcmbcr-
ton said.
Stewart said "Nearly all the
employers I talked to were pleased. ;
and said "Let's do it again."
Cindy Burleson associate dean for
career services at Hardin-Slmmons.
University said a group of 12 organiz-
ers began planning the career fair in
March 1993 and plans have begun tor
another fair next year.
Burleson said the location's atmo-
sphere was good for the fair but next
year the large displays should bc
placed at the back of the room.
Also next year all students should
be encouraged to attend not just
seniors she said.

Tuesday Night Devotionals raise spirits
By Eileen Tan
World Pago Editor
Tuesday Night Devotionals provide students
with opportunities for weekly spiritual lifts.
The devotionals arc conducted every Tuesday
from 9'10 p.m. at the Bcauchamp Amphitheater.
Most programs consist of worship time and a
speaker sharing a message said Brian Huff
member of the Spiritual Life Committee who
organizes the events.
Song leaders have been Invited to teach stu-
dents new songs at the March 22 devotional said
Huff sophomore youth and family ministry
major from Hurst. No speaker will be present
that night he added.
A dramatic interpretation of the scene at the
cross may be presented at another devotional.
The dramatic interpretation will use only sound
and a group of students will perform he said.
Plans for the event arc tentative and a date has
not yet been decided he said.
7f is good to just stop and
take a break and think
about life
Brian Huff
Speakers at the devotionals usually are upper-
classmen Huff said. Out-of-town and other pro-
fessional speakers occasionally arc invited. How-
ever the speakers from the latter categories are
rare because they are not paid he said.
The devotionals sometimes are conducted in
the Chapel on the Hill because of poor weather
conditions. '
Huff said the purpose of the devotionals is (o
give students a chance to spend time away from'
schoolwork and fellowship with others whife1
being motivated to live a Christian life. "'
"Mondays and Tuesdays arc such a rush... . l(
is good to just stop and take a break and think
about life" he said. '
About 125 students usually attend the dcvf
tionals Huff said adding he is more concerned
with the quality of time spent at the devotionals'
than with the number attending. (
"I don't think God cares if there are 100 peo-
ple or 10" he said.
