Bandits in Brazil
Missionaries Are -Released By
Payment Of 'Ransom
From Friends
In a letter to the. Christian Leader
signed by O. S. Boyer missionary to
Brazil a vivid account is given of the
capture by bandits of Virgil F. Smith
and wife also Church of Christ mis-
'sionarics who wore held several 'hours
for ransom in the' revolutionary state
of Brazil by tho Brazilian "Jessie
James" known as Hampeao. Virgil
Smith attended A. C. C. four years
and was graduated with tho class of
1025.
Since the revolution tho soldiers
called to the capital had not re-
turned. The bandit gang took ad-
vantage of their absonco and camo
back to their old haunts. News of
tho gang was heralded and it was
renorted that they wero within 75 1
miles of Matta Grande Alagoas
Brazil the place whore Bro. Smith
and Boyer live.
Demand $550 Ransom
The bandits had committed several
murdors and outrages on tho road
to the city. When news came of
their approach to within two miles
of tho town a farmer arrived shortly
having been compelled to bring in
letters demanding $1220.00 of two
citizens. In case of refusal the ban
dits threatened to. destroy thoirrfarms
and kill tho people of the town.
Another letter from tho bandit
gang -was that written by Virgil
Smith. It read: "Wo are prisoners
of Lnmpeao. Ho demands. $550.00. for
our liberty. Wo are with the crew
in the Fazenda do Jose Malta' na
Volta. Do what the Lord leads you
to do. Wo were traveling in tho
buggy when wo met him."
A part of. the sum demanded was
collected by O- S. Boyer and sent to
Lampeno. Within two hours the
Smiths woro freed and arrived safely
home.
Whilo a captive Smith had preached
Christ to tho bandit chleftian and it
so eucctea tno Danait mat no was
constrained to return half the ransom
money to Bro. Smith before his re-
lease. Brazilian soldiers' were dis
patched to Malta Grande and tho
town once more rested in peace.
