Public education was one of the primary goals of
Wood County and apparently the most difficult to at-
tain. In 1854, Governor E. M. Pease persuaded the
legislature to set aside two million dollars worth of
United States bonds for school purposes. With the in-
come from these bonds the state was able to begin a
system of public schools until interrupted by the Civil
War.
During this period, however, no record is found of a
public free school in Wood County. There were a
number of schools scattered throughout the county but
all were subscription or pay schools. Quitman is said
to have had a subscription school by 1852. Later in the
same year, a log schoolhouse was built in the western
part of the county near Chaney Crossing on Lake Fork
by J. O. Clark, Joe Crockett, Jesse Compton and Frank
Dowell. Clark was teacher of this school in 1852.
By 1854 a school was being taught in QUITMAN
that continued for a number of years. This is thought to
be the school attended by Belinda Gunstream, daughter of Peter Gunstream. She spoke of its being
located on a hill and taught the first year by a Mr.
Baggett. Mr. Strother taught the second term. Belinda
boarded at the Bingham Hotel while attending school.
A schoolhouse built on a hill about one and one-
half miles from the home of Peter Gunstream is
believed to be the first in the Holly Springs-Little Hope
area. The first teacher was fifteen-year-old Emily
Smith. Fifteen pupils were enrolled in this school.
Patrons were B. L. Robbins, Peter Gunstream and
Isham Burnett. This school existed in 1857 and
possibly began earlier.
According to the Quitman Herald published 7
September 1859, Quitman had three pay schools.
These were the QUITMAN ENGLISH AND
CLASSICAL SCHOOL; CANTON ENGLISH AND
CLASSICAL MALE AND FEMALE SCHOOL,
taught by M. C. Medford, and the EASTERN TEXAS
MALE AND FEMALE INSTITUTE. Faculty for the
latter was J. A. Strother, instructor in Latin, Greek,~;-- -~x"- -*
