received its name because there was "little hope" the
church would endure more than a year "because there
was so much backsliding around here." The Reverend
Jacob Ziegler as the first moderator recorded is
presumed to have been the first pastor of Little Hope.

Sharon Baptist Church, one of the oldest churches
in the county, was organized in 1852 by Epreham
Willingham. Charter members are unknown. The next
record of the church is 31 October 1856 when Sharon
became a member of the newly organized Rehobeth
Association. On 11 November 1868 this Association
met at Sharon. In January 1894 Sharon joined the
Smyrna Association, and later became a member of
Wood County Ass'n. The church building was a boxed
house about 20 X 24 feet with windows and door
shutters made of the same material. This building
served the church until 1891 when it was demolished
and a larger building erected. Some of the early pastors
were J. Warlick, W. H. Perkins, Jones, Reed, Stagner
and Wakefield. The church membership in 1878 was
132.

First Methodist Church of Perryville has no ex-
isting records before date of land deed 1 January 1887.
The land was given by J. D. Hallonquist. Trustees of
the church at that time were J. H. Cassaway, T. J.
Bailey, W. C. Hollonshead, and J. A. McDonnal. Some
of the charter members were Mrs. Rosa Florence Duffy,
Mrs. Sophia Swann, Mrs. Emma Lemmon, and Mrs.
Elizabeth McAllister.

Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, first called Holly
Springs, was organized 18 November 1853 about three-
fourths mile northeast of Pine Mills. Peter M.
Gunstream and wife, J. D. J. Davis and his mother,
Mary Davis, and another Mr. Davis and wife, were
charter members. J. D. J. Davis was a Baptist minister
and a brother-in-law of Peter Gunstream. He served as
pastor of the Holly Springs Baptist Church.
The church was re-located at a site closer to Pine
Mills and in September 1866, the name was changed to
Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Some of the earliest pastors were Ambrose
Fitzgerald, W. J. Canterbary, William Stapler, Jacob
Ziegler, J. W. Northcutt, H. H. Williams, Prescott
Davis, H. Y. Lively, S. S. Tucker, D. Y. Murdock, B. F.
Blaylock and W. R. Herington. Since that time, eigh-
teen other ministers have served as pastor of Mt.Pisgah.

for its building 9 August 1892, by R. L. and Ada
Churchill Reed. The deed referred to the church as
Pine Mills Christian Church. Mary Mansell Davis,
wife of J. K. (Poke) Davis was credited with finding the
first pastor. The church was organized prior to the con-
struction of a building on this site, however, as there is
a record of J. C. Shields joining the church in 1891.
Thirty-two members were recorded by 1900. Elders in
1892 were J. C. Shields and M. M. Wheeler. Some of
the early pastors were W. I. Brown, Walter A. Smith,
Phillip Mings, J. R. Lane, W. C. Holloway and Thomas
E. Milholland.

Mrs. Stafford Shamburger
Hubbard's Chapel Baptist Church was organized 5
September 1888. The first minutes written recorded
the following: "The following named brethern and
sisters met together and entered into a covenant to
organize into a Missionary Baptist Church to be known
as Hubbard's Chapel. Those with letters were Brother
Dyess, Brother Caldwell and wife, Brother Whitehurst,
Brother James M. Ballard and wife, Brother T. J.
Shaw and wife, and Sister Sarah Mosley. Those com-
ing by recommendation were Brother J. C. Vaughn and
wife, Brother J. F. Pollard, Sister Martha Shaw, Sister
L. R. Mosley, and Sister N. J. Collins. The Presbytery
consisted of Brother B. F. Blaylock, moderator, I. M.
Harvey and J. Fuller. Brother B. F. Blaylock was called
as pastor."
The church met in conference 9 March 1899 and
several members acknowledged misconduct such as
having a dance in their home or attending one. The
term used was "reveling."
A building committee was appointed 3 October
1891 consisting of A. W. Dyess, J. C. Vaughn, E. Q.
Martin and William Apel.
The church was dedicated 3 September 1892. The
following pastors served the church until 1900:

D. L. Jones, 1891-1892
B. F. Blaylock, 1892-1897
J. W. Peters, 1897-1899
B. F. Blaylock, 1899-1900
The church was named for Hubbard Mosley.

Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church was founded
in 1874.
No further information on these two churches.
First United Methodist Church of Winnsboro had
its beginning in 1857 when a building for public
worship and school use was constructed. This building
was used by all denominations. The Methodists for-mally organized their congregation in 1859. In 1871 a
two story building was erected for church and school
use and for fraternal organizations. This was followed
in 1880 by a one story church house for the Methodist26
