The first courthouse of the county was a one-story,
one room log structure located on the south side of the
public square in Quitman about the middle of the
block. The first courthouse to be built on the site of the
present courthouse was a two-story frame building

an expert cabinet maker, built the furniture for this
building. A brick courthouse was erected in 1883-84
during the administration of County Judge H. M.
Cate. This building served the county for forty years
