Black Stump Valley School
Both are right, but no one seems to remember
when the school was relocated.
The last building was one large room with
a sliding wooden partition used to divide the
upper and lower grades. Each room had a
cloak room, large wooden heater, a black-
board, desks and the teacher's desk. The
water well was across the road. All sports were
played outside. School events were well
attended by the community.
Some of the teachers recalled by former
students were: W.C. Perry, Adina Carroll
Parhams, Christine Fewell McClure, Doss
Simpson Harris, and Dr. D.D. Tidwell.

BLACK STUMP VALLEY
SCHOOL (IREDELL)
C20
Black Stump Valley School is remembered
by former students now in their eighties as
a two story building located at the edge of the
mountains near the now Tom Simpson home.
The lower story housed the school and the
upper floor was used by the Eastern Star and
the Lodge. Former students now in the mid-
fifties and earlier remember the school as a
one story building located on the prairie
about two or three miles closer to Iredell.Fairview School near Iredell-J.L. Bird, teacher
Walter Sadler Home-Footout.
Fairview School, District Number 29, was
located off the Meridian-Iredell Highway just
northwest of Pikesville. Back in the early
days, most everyone attended a country
school. All of the children in and around the
Fairview Community attended this school. It
was a two room building with folding doors
to divide the grade school section from the
high school section.
In the school year 1914-15, trustees were
J.M. Blue, J.S. Miller, J.J. Chewing, and the
teacher was Miss Arabella Phillips, Iredell.
The school term 1934-35 was the last year
that school was held at Fairview. LetaSome of the families living in the
"Footout" community in the 1800's were
Sadler, Rhodes, Main, Davis, Hudson and
Rymer. There was a church and school there,
and two of the teachers were Mrs. Smith and
Mr. Brannon. Bess and Lillian McElroy
taught there in the 1920's.
In 1880, Jim and Ella (Woodward) Davis
bought a farm near there. They had two sons,
Bob and Tom, and one daughter, Clifford,
(Mrs. J.L. Bird). The Texas Central Railroad
Line ran along the edge of their pasture land.
The railroad had a large woodyard there, asC21
