In the County Clerk's office are three big books con-
taining cattle brands of stockmen whose cattle ranged
in Denton County. There are several thousand brands
recorded. Upon looking at a page in the book, one
might think for the moment, that he had been trans-
ported to another part of the world and was trying to
decipher some strange record, for so many of these cat-
tle symbols are suggestive of Egyptian hieroglyphics,
Roman numbers, Greek letters, and Indian pictographs.
Just as the French, English, Scotch, and others have
had for centuries their family crests, the early cattle-
men of Texas have had their own coat of arms. The
one hundred forty brands here selected reflect much
sentiment and romance woven into the history of Den-
ton County in days gone by. For lack of space, many
interesting brands have necessarily been omitted.
