SUGGESTIONS TO TEACHERS
the trip in order to bring back much information. The
story of an actual visit to the county farm follows.
In order to know what to look for on the trip, it was
decided to bring some one to the school room who
really knew the nature of the problem. The soil ex-
pert for the E. C. W. was invited to talk to the class
on the problems of the Denton County Farm, a land
unit of 312 acres. Some of the things mentioned were
these: about 60 acres of the farm had been in cultiva-
tion about one generation too long and the county is
retiring this part from row crops and converting it into
a meadow; ridge terracing is being done on the aban-
doned land in order to turn it satisfactorily into per-
manent meadow. In about twelve years from now, in
1948, this abandoned crop land will be capable of being
planted in crops again and the production will likely
be ten or twelve times what it has been. Some other
problems mentioned were the width, height, and dis-
tance between terraces; the planting of Bermuda sod
at regular intervals on top of the ridge; the importance
of cultivating the row crops on the contour; the proper
construction of channels for draining the water from the
land; the construction of dams along the channel bed.
These problems aroused many questions. The soil ex-
pert invited the group to go with him to the farm a few
days later. There was much searching for books and
bulletins to read on terracing. A map of Denton County
