StMMBR SCHOOL
The llrnenis t he Derived from
Them
The following address was delivered
Saturday by ll II Oxford
The Importance of this subject on
this occasion demands more ability
than Is possessed by tha average school
boy yet whatever capacity I may
have considering tho brevity of my
preparation in pre ntlng to > ou the
benefits to be derived from a sumn t
school jou the the Young Mens
Christian a social Ion representatives of
Texas shall be the recipients ot Its
most earnest effort Preparatory to
the presentation of tills subject it
would probably be better to state in
a brief way the manner In which such
a school Is managed In order that the
greatest possible good may be accom
pushed in the shortest time
At Geneva In 189J the days work
began by the meeting of the volunteer
band at about 1 o clock In the morn
Ing This was succeeded by a meeting
of the presidents of associations Pol
lowing this meeting were the two Bible
classes In which the truths of the les-
son were brought to light and the les-
son dispatched with astonishing rapid
lty Immediately following was the
general meeting for the purpose of
discussing the perplexing problems of
associations fathering suggestions
from the most experienced workers Of
tho land and forming methods most
conducive to the best management of
associations The problems being
speedily solved and the business
pushed forward In grent haste this
meeting was dismissed and succeeded
in turn by a platform lecture from
one of that eorps of great men which
Geneva had felected for tho occasion
All the forenoon is now consumed and
the afternoon is spent In recreation
and preparation of duties for the fol-
lowing day About sundown smalt
groups would assemble along the lake-
shore and plan for the management of
their associations during the following
> ear At 8 oolock In the evening we
again assembled In the tabernacle and
listened to one of those able lectures
on some of the most Important topics
of the day concerning associations
This Is a brief sketch of our dally
program One who has never attended
a summer school cannot Imagine the
swiftness with which business Is dls
tensed aqd the great strain tho mind
is under
It would be a ery dull person In-
deed whose mind would not be aroused
to Its greatest activity and wholly con-
centrated on the subject when one of
those nble lecturers la pouring forth
v oltey after olley of deep thought
upon subjects In which we are most
Interested and In a manner of eloquence
Indescribable It Is no trouble to listen
jou cannot keep from It You will
laugh you will cry jou will see
new light In the old familiar scriptures
> ou have read from earl > childhood
The Bible Is no more the old dr Look
of ancient history It now becomes
new und partakes of the character of
n sublime novel a brilliant and Inter-
esting hi a tor > a most profound philoso
ph > New truths shine forth which
have ever before 1men bidden In ob
securltj and an engirneM Is aroused
lit jour soul to read the Rlbte with an
Interest that has never before been
known to > our past life Not only
Is your Interest Increased but > our
faith Is strengthen d
Listen to an able and eloquent theo-
logian as ho fathoms tl e depths of the
divine truths of the sacred book go
with htm In his thoughts as he points
out the mUHlment of the divine proph-
ecies follow hi in In his demonstra-
tion as he shows to > ou more clearly
than > ou have ever seen before Gods
plan of salvation then If jour faith
Is not Increased jou are not suscepti-
ble of being cultivated nor worthy to
be called the lords of creation
When our e > es are opened up bj
such a one to the full realization of the
length the breadth the helghtjind the
depth of tb plan of salvation it glo-
riously reflects a divine charade
which has heretofore been dimly com-
prehended
Again when testimonies are called
for and we see scores of joung men
rising up to give a moment s utteranco
of thanks from n heart full of grati-
tude and love to God for the sal-
vation of their souls and the wondrous
plan of redemption we feel we are In
a grand causo and one which Is of
more concern to man than any other
For what doth It protlt a man If ho
gain the whole world und lose his own
soutOur
Our surroundings at a summer school
offer evviy facility for Increasing our
faith and more faith Is what the
Clulstlan of the world Is more In need
of today than anything else
Place several hundred younr men
where the > can realize that the salva-
tion of their associates nnd the rising
generation depends upon their labors
and j ou can hardly Imagine the
earnestness with which every effort is
forwarded Such ts fullj realized at a
summer school and by Just such joung
men we are surrounded As a natural
outgrowth ofa strengthened faith are
our views of life broadened So often
our love for humanity Is limited to our
own municipality and we are at
enmity v Hli all the test of the world
Wo love our associates and personal
acquaintances we pray for them and
want to meet them In heaven but the
remaining thousands of the world with
whom unt < rtunatelj w o hav e nev er be-
come Intimately associated we care
nothing for and should we be called
upon to pray for them our prayers
would be ai dry and votd of feeling
an If wo Were prajlng for the dumb
brutes of the Held to share our homo
In heaven I trust the picture H not
overdrawn In showing to you how nar-
row the limits of the uncultured u m s

uncultured we do not mean the word
In Its broadest and most common ac-
cepted sense We mean it In Us high

We may read In books and current
llteutture of the daj the deplorable
condition of otber nations their need
of mlnslonarler and their ready ac-
ceptance of Christianity jet we can
never realize the gnat Importance of
Christian workers who are willing to
give up home und friends to admin
ister to the wants and needs of
strangers In n foreign land till we
come In personal contact with some
one who has actually been there and
who can tell In contour and In detail
tho exuet condition of those nations
It Is astonishing to listen to a man
w bo has almost trav eled the world
over nnd who has spent the greater
part of his life In foreign Held1 as he
relates the great eagerness with whlrh
they listen to the gospel their en
thusiasm when converted and their
love for the nation which has sent
them the good tidings Hire it Is pre-
sented to us more vividly than we
could pnssibty gather from nnj other
source that other nations are also peo-
ple of Clod and that thej will be al
lowed to share our home In heaven
Then we ask ourselves shall we never
strive to aid them In their endeavors
to reach the kingdom nor leiin to love
them till we meet on that beautiful
shore
Having looked Into the spiritual

broadening of our horlzen Is tho quick-
