It’s for
the dog
DORIS NEWMAN
Our trip east to the groomer one morning
last week was the telltale sign. As our little
Jack Russell rescue terrier fidgeted around
on the passenger seat, a persistent chim-
ing eventually demanded my awareness.
Surprise and amusement eased in as I real-
ized our lapdog was setting off the seatbelt
alarm for the first time.
I believe it's something like 17 pounds or
so of weight in the seats sets the alarm off.
It's happened before with a large bundle
of newspapers, but this was the first time it
ever went off with Vala in the seat.
As she's gotten older she's bulked up
steadily from the mere 1 1/2 -pound runt
of the litter we brought home from the
shelter. She still has the energy Jack Rus-
sells are famous for - when she wants to.
But we've
noticed a
good bit of
laziness in
her daily
habits too.
So we've
decided to
veer from
our individ-
ual tread-
mill sessions
back to
our family
walks at the civic center. I say back because
there was an article a couple years ago that
said just because you get off track for a few
days, weeks, months, doesn't mean you
quit. It's about mindset.
But getting back in the swing is hard. I
remember one lady here in town, mother
of a city councilman, who said she walked
to live. Simply, walking helped her to be
healthier and she would not let everything
that sprang up interfere. Us, not so much.
For years off and on we've driven to and
walked at the civic center. Many years
ago we used to see a widower and widow
walking their routes of the circle. Eventu-
ally, we noticed them walking together and
some time after, they got married. There
are children on the playground, golfers,
tennis players and women, men, couples
and folks walking and running with short
and tall leashed dogs. For years there's
been a pair of very slender sisters we've
seen out walking. It's like a community
square-type place of people trying to do
what they need to to be healthy.
So with our pampered pooch as our
motivation we're making the effort to put
one foot in front of the other at the civic
center. It already seems to helping as we've
noticed her strained strides have become
more like a perky prance. It is also worth it
just for the look of amusement on my doc-
tor7 s face when the question about exercise
arises and I tell him yes, we're walking. The
dog needs the exercise.
Mineola Memorial Library Notes
BY LIBRARIAN MARY HURLEY
What an amazing start to the
summer! The library kicked off
its Summer Reading Programs on
Wednesday, June 8 and have not
stopped.
Here's what has happened so far
this summer:
3 trips to Mineola Primary Sum-
mer School with the bookmobile and a
program; 3 trips to Mineola Elementary
Summer School with the bookmobile
and a program; 4 trips to Addie Mc-
Farland Community Center with the
bookmobile and a program; 8 Summer
Reading Programs at the Library on
Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m.; 2 chil-
dren's Money Camps; 2 Author Signings;
Regular bookmobile stops to Wood Me-
morial, Mineola Healthcare Residence,
Autumn Winds, and the Senior Commu-
nity; Family Craft Day the third Friday
of the month; American Girls Historical
Reading Club the second Saturday of
the month; Library Book Club the third
Thursday of the month and Lego® Club
the last Saturday of the month.
Phew! We are exhausted and excited
all at the same time. What a great way to
spend the summer.
We did close for the Fourth of July
weekend so our staff could enjoy some
time with their families and celebrate the
holiday.
Summer Reading Programs continue
in the month of July on Wednesday
afternoons at 2 p.m. There are programs
for children and for Teens / Tweens. The
last summer reading program event will
be Wednesday, July 27.
We have reading logs to keep up with
summer reading. It is important to keep
reading during the summer to keep
those skills sharp. It only takes about
20 minutes a day. Here goes with my
standard speech: the more you read, the
faster you get at reading and the more
words you know, Dr. Seuss tells us we
can go more places with more knowl-
edge; and, it is a "cool" activity during
these hot summer months. This is a time
to explore reading opportunities: not
just the books you must read for as-
signments, but other things that might
interest you.
In July, we will have the American
Girls Historical Reading club on Satur-
day, July 9 at 10 a.m. Please, register to
attend by Wednesday, July 6 so there will
be enough supplies for all participants.
This is a time for mothers (or
favorite female adult relative)
and girls to learn about history
through craft, games, and snacks.
It is a together time, not a time to
sit and observe.
Mineola Memorial Library is
part of the East Texas Library Friends
Book Club. They will meet on July 9 at
2 p.m. in Rains County to discuss "The
Land Girls" by Angela Huth. It is about
girls who worked on farms in England
during World War II.
Children's Money Camp will be of-
fered to 5 year olds to 10 year olds on Fri-
day, July 8 and Friday, July 15 from 1 to 5
p.m. This is a time to learn about money
through lessons, activities, and games.
Children learn about needs versus wants.
Saving versus spending. Different types
of financial accounts. Simple things we
take for granted. A Money Camp for
Teens will be offered on Thursday, July
21 from 1 to 5 p.m. for children ages 11
and up and will be a bit more in-depth
but still fun. We do thank all of those in-
volved in making these camps possible.
Family Craft Day will be Friday, July
15 at 10 a.m. This is a time for a family
to make something together. It is not a
"drop-off" program. Supplies are limited
so projects are one to a family instead of
one to a person. It is fun seeing families
work together to make something. And
the memories it can create....
The library has its own book club and
that will meet Thursday, July 21 at 6 p.m.
(light refreshments will be served). This
month's book is "The River" by Beverly
Lewis. After a discussion of the book, the
highlights, what was liked and not liked;
a new selection will be revealed.
The Annex Book Sale will take place
on Saturday, July 16 beginning at 9 a.m.
- weather and volunteers permitting. We
are hitting the hot part of summer and
even with fans, it can be daunting. Call
the library to confirm.
Children may notice we are missing
the touchscreen computer filled with
fun, educational games. Something,
beyond our control, happened when
installing an update and we were in-
structed to return it for updating at the
factory.
Remember, the Mineola Memorial Li-
brary is a 501(c)3, non-profit. We are not
supported by tax dollars. Your donations
are tax deductible.
Alba library plans children's activities
The Alba Public Library
Summer Reading Pro-
gram begins Thursday
and will take place every
Thursday in July begin-
ning at 1 p.m. Children
ages 4-12 are invited to
attend and must read age
or grade-level books.
The program will also
include different activi-
ties each week.
This week's meeting
will be at the Alba City
Park for hot dogs, games
and registration. The pro-
gram will meet again at
the park on July 14 where
special guest Dave Gan-
non, a dog trainer, will
demonstrate simple com-
mands with his dogs.
The meeting on July
21 will be held at the li-
brary with harmonica
music and songs. The fi-
nal meeting, July 28, will
be at Pizza Hut in Mine-
ola for lunch and prize
awards.
