THE RAILROADS
NEWS
NOTES GATHERED FROM
MANY SOURCES
Personal Mention of Railway Ofilclalf
Description of a Sliding Railway
for the Worlds Pair
A Slidin tr Railway
A sliding railway is to be one of the
features of tho Worlds Fair The mo-
tive power is water The train being pro
polled over the steel plates on cars resting
on castiron boxes technically called
skates between which and tho plates is
forced a thin film of water preventing fric-
tion as the train glides along on the plates
Tho cars are extremely light tho steadi-
ness of motion and the absence of strain
making such construction possible It is
claimed that with this system both the
starting and stopping of trains can be ef-
fected more rapidly than with steam rail-
ways
Tho mechanical arrangement of the mo-
tive power is quite complex A main is laid
either alongside or under tho rails contain-
ing water imder pressure the pressure bo
ing supplied by stationary engines placed at
intervals along tho line This main which
is provided to convey the water for pro
palling purpose has a number of accumu-
lators At the end of each of these vessels
aro attached vertical discharging pipes
called Dropellers The propellers are car-
ried above tho level of the rail so that they
will discharge the water horizontally in the
direction of the train as it proceeds Under-
neath each carriage is fixed a rectilinear
turbine or bucket rack which receives the
direct impact of water discharged by tho
propellers and imparts motion to tho train
This turbine has two rows of buckets one
above tho other tho angles of their webs
beingset In opposite directions in order fo
give a forward or backward motion to the
tram
Tho speed of tho train aepends entirely
on the pressure given from the stationary
cng mis The number of propellers to each
line or rail dpends on tha minimum length
cf trains and on tha steepness of the gradi-
ent The propeller is opened automatically
by a leer at the head of tho trains so that
on a ievui line there Is always one propalsr
acting but on a steep gradient others would
be placed so that two or mone would al
waSs bo acting and the same speed main-
tained without regard to the gradient to bo
overcome Two supplies of water are nec-
essary one for the slides and the other for
motive powei

A Railroad Scoop
Atlanta Ga March 13 Todays Con-
stitution publishes a story of a railroad
deal which will eclipse all previous made
It is in effect that the Baltimore and Ohio
have scooped the Richmon6Terminal and
that this was brought about by overtures
of President Inmans friends and also that
Mr Oakum of Now York will become pres
ident of the Richmond Terminal instead of
MrInman who retires inhis favor in orderto
enjoy the diseomfitlre of Messrs Brice and
Thomas It seems that while the latter
has been playing with the Olcot plan John
Inman and Pat Calhoun have been doing
more effective work elsewhere and so well
haye they guarded their wcrk that Messrs
Brice and Thomas aro sleeping injignoranco
of it The deal includes the Old Blue line
making the now combination consist of
the Jersey Central Reading Baltimore
and Ohio and Richmond and Danville and
its leased lines except the Central Tho
Centrals leases will not bo retained but
that road will be turned loose to do business
on its own account This 111 dispose of
the receivership now in the Federal courts
The East Tennessee however passes into
the new deal so that the Baltimore and
Ohio will extend to the Atlantic coast at
Brunswick Ga over trio East Tennessee
ana to the Mississippi at Greenville over
the Georgia Pacific
