Two Democratic state conventions
have been held this summer and they
make no equivocal demand for free and
unlimited coinage of silver Ohio and
Iowa Democrats are for honest money
and for as much of it as the country
can get
North Texas is having a good sup-
ply of rain but we have not heard that
it was due to the explosion of dynamite
in the air by the United States govern-
ment The late Alliance convention in
Fort Worth exploded a great deal of
dynamite which probably had the
same eilect
The list of Governor Hogg s enemies
is increased by at least two Aliee and
Lyons who murdered Bowen are re-
manded to jail without hail Governor
Hogg took a hand in the case and de-
tailed good counsel to represent the
state in getting at the bottom facts It
is largely to this able prosecution that
Alice and Lyons owe their present con-
dition instead of being out on a nomi-
nal bond Lot the murders keep up
and the party represented by the Waco
Day will continue to grow in strength
and if its members can get their free-
dom in time they will make it mighty
hot for Hogg
The presidential battle is on If
McKinley is successful in Ohio he will
be the Republican nominee and if Mc-
Kinley is the Republican nominee the
logical result would seem to be Cleve-
land as the Democratic candidate If
Campbell is elected governor of Ohio
against the apostle of protection it
would seem that Campbell should bo
the Democratic candidate for presi-
dent Could McKinley defeat Cleve-
land for the presidency Harrison did
The Republicans since 1876 have lost
only one presidential battle and in
that they were led by an Eastern can-
didate Mr Blaine in 18S4
BEYOND a desiro that the winner
may be one of whom The Gazette
will be proud for itself and for Texas
this paper has no candidate in the great
contest over the honor of securing an
elective scholarship in Hardin ladies
college and Mozart conservatory of
muaic and this much it can say to all
without partiality to any Do not bo
overconfident The contest will bo a
memorable one and it will grow in in-
terest as the da s roll by Those who
propose to stay till the finish should
rustle while it is called today for the
night of August 17 will come when no
one can rustle in tins famous contest
Hon Henrt Watterson has
again been interviewed and this time
he ii determined to mako no mistake
Ho thinks the Democrats will nomi-
nate either Cleveland Gorman Gray
Campbell Boise Morrison Pattison
Abbot or Waller It is very likely
that they will nominate one of these
men or somebody else Tho only man
left out of Mr Wattersons summary is
Dave Hill Mr Watterson had a cor-
respondence with Hill a few months
ago which appears to have bad the
effect of making him forgot that there
is a man in New York who has twice
been governor is now United States
senator and who has incidentally been
mentioned as a probable candidate for
the presidency
The argument of a correspondent
that silver should be made dependent
upon gold because silver has deprecia-
ted in value since 1S73 is not a very
strong one when one knows the means
by which that depreciation was
brought about Silver was worth
as much as gold at the ratio
then established When it was
demonetized it fell in value because
one of its chief functions had been
taken from it Its enemies crippled it
and they now point to its disabled con-
dition as evidence of its unfitness to
circulate alongside of gold With as
much justice might the owner of a
team hamstring one of his horses and
then beat it because it could not keep
up with the other that had not been
disabled
BLAINES HEALTH
Blaines health has been the cause of
more contradictory dispatches in the
newspapers than that of any other
man in tho country It has been so
ever since the bright Sunday morning
in Washington some years ago when
he sank under the heat of the sun and
sat on a church steps with his head
supported on his wifes lap That was
a fortunate stroke for Mr Blaine as it
caused a suspension of a congressional
investigation of his rape of the Mulli-
gan letters with the result that after
congress adjourned he was elected to
the senate and the matter was dropped
Frequently since then his health has
been a topic of newspaper discussion
wi wer it was thought that he ined

itatcd seriously on his own candidacy
for the presidency The recent somewhat
sensational dispatches sent out from
Bar Harbor concerning his alleged de-
crepitude and broken physical condi-
tion have brought forth an indignant
denial from him Ho is not sick but
only tired He eats and sleeps like
other people and has no thought of
dying Now let some enterprising re-
porter get a contrary assurance from a
discarded physician and in time the
newspapers may succeed in worrying
the poor man to death It is perhaps a
trifle early to begin on his obituary
but unless he quits public life for good
and all it is not improbable that he
may collapse sooner than he now
thinks

IN OHIO
The election of a Democratic governor
of Ohio is not a common event even
with a united and harmonious party
With the party divided as it now is
and tho relentless personal enemies of
the Democratic candidate knifing
him success appears impossible As
time goes by this personal hate will
lose some of its intensity The use of
politic means tho intercession of
mutual friends and above all the offer
of some concessions by the Campbell
faction to the Cincinnati enemies of the
governor will do niueh to reconcile
them And more than all other agen-
cies tho forco of party discipline and
the excitement of party feeling will do
much to allay this resentment and
bring to the polls in November the
Democratic voters each with a Camp-
bell ballot in his hand There will not
bo many votes lost on account of tho
disaffection now so threatening to the
Democrats
But the loss of even a few votes will
imperil Democratic success while tho
opposition is apparentlj united and en-
thusiastic McKinley has a strong
following The heavy manufacturing
districts aro personally interested in his
success because his defeat would mean
tho overthrow of his exaggerated prin-
ciple of protection and the loss of
profits that protection brings They
aie fighting for very existence and
they will fight hard
No estimate can be made of the
strength to be developed by the Farm-
ers Alliance in this contest The
leadors of tho Alliance have boasted
that they would destroy McKinley and
Sherman but we know that they make
a very loud boast with little to back it
Theie are a great many Alliance men
in Ohio and if they nominate a state
ticket and vote for it tho greater loss
will probably fall on McKinley but if
they do not run a state ticket leaving
the Alliance Republicans to vote tho
Republican ticket and the Alliance
Democrats to vote the Democratic
ticket tho prospect of the election of the
Democratic candidate is not encourag-
ing

I respectfully ask you to publish the fol-
lowing quotations from an address by an
able legislator The doctrines which he
promulgates have heretofore found expres-
sion in many of your editorials yet they
are so logica1 and accord so fully with tho
experience of all observant candid patriots
that their frequent presentation in various
forms to tho people will go far towards
educating tho reading masses and dispelling
the mists of fiat money and baseless irre-
deemable paper and the foolish notion that
the government can create and supply the
people with money B
There is another question in which the
people arc vitally interested and that is
tho currency question They want good
money and plenty of it They wantall their
money of equal value so that a dollar will
be the same whether it is made of gold or
silver or paper Wo have had this kind of
money since the resumption of specie pay-
ments in January 1S79 Nobody wants to-
go hack to the old condition of things when
it was gold to the bondholders and paper to
the pensioners when tho outstanding gov
emment bonds were 1500000000 and
banks could issue paper money upon the
deposits of bonds tho volume of currency
could expand upon the increase of business
But that condition is passing aw y The
bonds are being paid and the time is com-
ing and has come when tho amount of bonds
is so reduced and their values is so in-
creased that banks cannot afford to buy
bonds upon which to issue circulating notes
We must contemplate the time when the
national banks will not issue their notes
but become banks of discount and deposit
The banks are evidently acting upon this
theory for they have voluntarily largely re-
duced their circulation How shall this cur-
rency bo replaced Certainly not by the
notes of state banks No notes should circu-
late as money except such as have the sanc-
tion authority aud guarantee of the United
States The best form of theso is certifi-
cates based upon gold and silver of value
equal to the notes outstanding Nor should
any distinction be mado between gold and
silver Both should be received
at their market valuo ia the
market of the world Their
relative value varies from day to day and
there is no power strong enough to estab
lish a fixed ratio of value except the con-
currence of the chief commercial nations of
the world We coin both metals at a fixed
ratio but we maintain them at par with
each other by limiting the amount of the
cheaper metal to the sum needed for sub-
sidiary coin and receiving and redeeming

of tho last congress a conservative meas-

Texas will have ono of the largest state
buildings on the ground Thomas J Hur

of tho Texas Worlds Fair exhibit associa-

Designer and Chief Atwood about tho
building President Hurley said they
would put up a building to cover every foot
of space set apart for Texas Our build-
ing is to be 500 feet long and 250 feet across
at its greatest width It will bo 150 feet
wide at the narrowest point I understand
that Kansas may not put up a building
Col Hurloy continued as ho examined the
map of Jackson park If that is so Texas
puts in a claim for tho space reserved for
Kansas We will need it and probably
more Our state will raise every dollar of
jC000T0 for tho Worlds fair We rely
on getting 3000C0 by popular subscription
Then the counties will raise that much
more Galveston has already started out
to collect 20000
President Hurley decided to use staff and
Texas lumber in the construction of the
building It will embrace many of the
features of old Spanish buildings in Texas
and New Mexico President Hurloy is
well pleased with tho site chosen and
filed a formal application for it yesterday
At least 100000 will be expended on the

FORT WORTH ALLIANCE MEETING
How It Looks In the Eye of an Out-
sider
Browxwood TEX July 141891
Editor Gazette
I have read with interest the proceedings
of the Fort Worth Alliance meeting What
is all this row about As I understand it
President Tones appointed a certain com-
mittee commonly known as tho steering
committee to attend the last sitting of the
legislature and to secure as far as possible
legislation in accordance with tho Alliance
views Certain members of tho legislature
who were also members of tho Alliance
issued a circular denouncing this commit-
tee the president of the Alliance and the
official organ The president of the Alli-
ance called a conference at Waco in which
all Alliances without regard to their views
upon this or any other question had a-
right to be represented The conference
almost unanimously indorsed the commit-
tee One of tho charges against the mem-
bers of the steering committee was that
they favored tho subtreasury scheme
though what their views upon this or anj
other national measure had to do with their
cfiiciency as a state legislative committee
has never been explained
The state Alliance of Texas will meet in
August and every representative opposed to
the subtreasury will have a right to be heard
at the meeting The Aliianco is reputed to
be a regularly organized body with tribu-
nals authorized to speak with authority
That tho steering committee did not agree
with certain Alliance members of the legis-
lature on the details of certain measures
was no cause for grievance unless these
members believed tuat these committeemen
bad beencorrupted in which event it was
clearly their duty to prefer specific charges
in the Alliance instead of indulging in
general denunciation to the public That
members of tho Alliance have a right to
opposo tho subtreasury goes without say
ing but they must make their appeal to the
state Alliance the tribunal which they
themselves have created and they must
bow to its authority so far as recognizing
what Alliance demands in this state are
Of course they can withdraw if the demands
do not suit them
To an outsider this Fort Worth meeting
looks vers much like the culmination of a
determined effort to disrupt the Alliance

ticians C H Jexkixs

that the professor is crazy and the de-

ment Mrs Henry was visited at her resi-
dence on Main street and a history of the
case obtained from her She and the
professor were married about three years
ago when she was a widow Johnston and
having a son Jhntnie Johnston then about
nluo years old Mrs Henry says there has
been trouble ever since tho murriage on ac-
count of this child The professor has gone
to drinking and has at repeated times
threatened her life On yesterday Henry
got in a bad way and lastnight his wife and
her son sought shelter at a neighbors
Mrs Henry first took her husbands pistols
and hid them He told her if she ever had
him arrested that he would be prepared
and would kill the oHcc and then if he
ever got free that he would kill her in
fact he was a bad man and never would

THAT DALLAS 1I1LK
The adulterated milk subject is still
agitating tho averaso Dallasite Kver since
it has been known that some of the milk
dealers have beeu selling impure milk made
after some secret formula the city chemist
has been working at the matter and tho
following is the result of his investigation
as far as the analysis goes
It is 1 part phosphate of soda 2 parts bi-
carbonate of soda 2 parts nitrate of potash
0 parts salt S parts glycerine S parts milk
ash or lfi parts condensed milk 1G parts
water boiled and cooled If one uses
pounds as parts the formula will make OV
gallons of tho compound wnich will not
cost more than 3 and will double 12i gal-
lons of milk If ono uses condensed mill
in place of milk ash tho above formula if
pounds aro used as parts will make 0 < j gal-
lons of the compound will cost less than
i 0 and will double HU gallons of milk
The milk ash is mado by taking eight
parts of fresli milk and four parts refined
sugar Mix and place in a vessel
inclosed in another vessel containing
water place on fire allow it to
boil till it becomes a thick paste Then
pour this paste into fiat pans so that it is
not more than one inch in depth Then
place tho pans in an oven and with a regu
lar heat allow the paste to remain until it
becomes a dry powder when it is ready for
use Onefourth is lost by evaporation
so that ifhe above parts are pound one
will have nine pounds of powder at a cost
of not neru than CO cents
The con jitioa is said to bo very injuri-
ous ospeeiaij to the health of children
Tho chemist says he has the names of the
dairymen wio have been manufacturing
and dispensuu it They deserve tho
heaviest penalty and should be debarred
from selling milk in the future
Two milk dealers have been arrested for
violating the city milk ordinance This
morning Edwards Bros dairymen pleaded
guilty to the charge and were lined 2 W-
It Atwood was also up before tho court on
the charge and proposed to fight the matter
The trial was held this afternoon before a
jury in tho city court After tho argu-
ments tho case went to the jury which had
not at 530 this evening returned a verdict
It is reported that some time ago a man
came to Dallas having in his possession the
secret of making cheap milk He ap-
proached some of the milkmen on the mat-
ter and as a result it is said a number of
tho milkmen pooled issues and bought the
secret and tho exclusive right to use it in
Dallas paying for the same the sum of
S2500 Theso may or may not be tho facts
in tho case but it is evident that someotio
has been tampering with the purity of the
Dallas milk supply and that tho scheme
having been discovered someone is out of
pocket in tho purchase of a secret that they
cannot use
