A Texas classic is the “Babe
of the Alamo” speech made,
many years ago, by Guy M.
Bryan in the House of Repre-
sentatives :
I intended, MJr. Speaker, to be
silent on this occasion, but sil-
ence would now be a reproach
when to speak is a duty. No one
has raised a voice in behalf of
this orphan child; several have
spoken against her claim. I raise.
Sir, in behalf of no common cause
for Liberty was its foundation,
heroism and martyrdom conse-
crated it. I speak for the orphan
child of the Alamo.
No orphan children of pa-
triots can send a similar petition
to this house — none save her
can say, “I am the child of the
Alamo.”
Well do I remember the con-
sternation which spread throll-
out the land when the sad tid-
ings reached our ears that the
Alamo had fallen! It was here
that a gallant few, the bravest
of the brave, threw thems.elves
betwixt the enemy, and the set-
tlements, determined not to sur-
render nor retreat. They re-
deemed that pledge with the for-
feit of their lives — they fell, the
chosen sacrifice to Texas free-

Sink and
Dishwashing
Center
An Electric Sink forms
the sink and dishwash-
ing center of the modern
electric kitchen. It takes
the unpleasant tasks of
dishwashing and gar-
bage disposal right out
of your hands. No smelly
garbage pails—inside or
out. No more slopping
around in soapy, greasy
dishwater. Bring dishes
directly from table to
sink, and quickly thrust
all "dirty work" inside.
Soon, you can push all the
messy jobs into your new electric
sink—and relax.
Simple scrape the dirty dishes
over the sink, and—whoosh—
the garbage disposal unit be-
neath, grinds and washes away
the scraps and waste food.
Stack the dishes easily into
your automatic dishwasher, add
the soap powder, press the but-
ton... and the dishes are washed,
rinsed and dried with no further
attention.
You’ll want an Electric Sink in
that new dream-home—or add it
like a miracle in your present
kitchen.

pToaeli of the invader, was sleep-
ing in fancied security, when the
gun of the Alamo first announ-.
<ced that the Attilia of the South
was near. Infuriated at the re-
sistance of Travis and his noble
band, he marshaled his whole
army beneath the walls, and rol-
led wave after wave of his hosts
against those battlements of
freedom. In vain he strove; the
flag of liberty — the Lone Star
of Texas — still streamed out up-
on the breeze and floated proud-
ly from the outer wall. Madden-
ed and persistent, he reared his
batteries and, after daArs of fur-
ious bombardment and repeated
assaults, he took a blackened and
ruined mass — the blood-stained
walls of the Alamo. The noble,
the martyred spirits of all its
gallant defenders had taken
their flight to another fortress,
not made with hands.
But for the stand at the Alamo
Texas would have been desol-
ated to the Sabine. Sir, I ask
this pittance, and for whom?
For the only living witness, save
the mother, of this awful tragedy
— “this bloodiest picture in the
book of time,” the bravest act
that ever swelled the annals of
any country,
Grant the boon! She claims it
as the Christian child of the Ala-
mo — baptized in the blood of
Travis, a Bowie, a Crockett and
a Bonham. To turn her away
would be a shame! Give her
what she asks, that she may ^ be
educated and become a worthy
child of the state — that she
may take that position in so-
ciety to which she is entitled by
the illustrious name of her mar-
tyred father — illustrious be-
cause he fell at the Alamo.

support which he received in his
present home county and in the
county where he was reared to
manhood. Shivers, a World War
II combat war veteran (the only
veteran in this race), polled ap-
proximately 75 percent of the
votes in Jefferson county, his
present home, and was a 25 to 1
favorite over his runoff oppon-
ent ih Tyler county, where he
spent his youth. Senator Shiv-
ers led his runoff opponent by
approximately 100,000 votes in
Texas.
“I am deeply grateful for the
confidence the people of Texas
have shown in me and the pro-
gressive program for Texas
which I advocate,” Shivers said.
“I shall strive even harder to
work for the welfare of Texas.”
“Because I represent the mass-
es of the people, there will be
those in the runoff campaign who
will conspire to defeat me,”
Shivers predicted. “I will not
be swayed by these radical, mi-
nority groups—the C.LO. noise-
makers in particular. My oppon-
ent is welcome to the support
which they are giving him. I
will continue to fight for the
right and welfare and progress
of our people who make up the
backbone of Texas.”
