During the coming year there
will be a great reduction of the
troops in Cuba, and it is intimat-
ed at the War Department that
by the beginning of the next sum-
mer it will be possible to manage
all <>f the militia remaining id
Y uba through one general officer
acting under the direction of Gov.
Wood.
Yesterday was "arbor day,” as
proclaimed by the governor. Did

After all, the legislature is no
doubt doing the best it knows how
under the circumstances.
Van Alstyne is not hoggish, but
-he ships more hogs than any city
of her size in north Texas.
The tool of the politicians will
never defeat Randell for congress.
The people are determined on
that.
Van Alstyne is still democratic
headquarters of Grayson county.
Judge Bliss will tire his opening
campaign gun here Saturday night
the 21th.
What’s the matter with a cot-
ton mill for Van Alstyne? There
is probably enough idle money id
the town and vicinity to butfd two
cotton mills.
J. L. Harbisonof Collinsville is
now squarely in the race for the
legislature. Mr. Harbison is a
-plendid citizen and would make
a good represeutative.
The presidency of the Massa-
chusetts Institute of Technology
has been offered to Rear Admir-
al William T. Sampson, and has
been declined by him
Of course Van Alstyne don’t
-how np as large on the map as
Dallas and some other towns but
then she’s a power and covers all
the ground she stands on.
Rural delivery has been estab-
lished at Weston, Collin county.
Length of route 24 miles, area
overed 34 square miles, popula-
tion served 1,093, carrier J. W.
Baker.
Indications are that there will
be considerable political rand-
slinging before the campaign i«
over. This is all wrong: candi-
dates should not throw mud -
bricks would have a more teili* g
effect.
It is now in order for Dr. Blount
of Denton to send in a year’s sub-
scription to those McKinney pa-
pers that have recently flopped
on tne congressional race snd se-
cure their “influence"' and sup-
port until some other caudidate
bobs up and sends in a year a

Hon. Wm. J. Bryan ha* com-
pleted his tour of the eart and if
demonstration means anything he
will knock the prop9 from under
Dollar Mark Hanna and William
Mike Inley before this century
closes. Mr. Bryan was greeted
with large aodiencea everywhere
and his great eloquence ands^und
doctrine had a telling effect.
The Honey Grove Signal give-
this bit of politiaal information :
‘ Many a man in Texas will this
year support with all the zeal he
can command certain candidate
for office, while he leaves bis wife
and children to support them-
selves. Nearly all Americans are
rustlers, but the trouble with
many of us is that we don’t rustle

Recent reports r. ceived by the
Western Fruit Grower’s Associ-
ation from the state- of Missouri,
Iowa, Arkansas. Kansas, Okl tho-

that the pro-peets for fruit, as
c wipared with a year ago, are
much better.
Plans for the general confer-
ence of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, to be held in Chicago
next May, were discussed by the
book committee of the Methodist
Church at tne close of its annual
session. A detailed programme
of the eonveDtion, winch will
open on May 2 at the Auditorium,
and continue for a month, will be
issued within two weeks. It i>
estimated that the sessions will
bring fully 15,00b Methodists to
Chicago from all parts of the
country._
In response to a resolution of
tho Senate, the Secretary of War
sent to the Senate a statement
showing the receipts and disbur-e-
ments of public funds in the Is-
land of Cuba for the year 1899.

amounting to $16,346,015, of
which $15,011,089 were from cus-

Young Man Fatally Burned.
Gherman, Tex., Feb. 20.—On
last 1 hursday evening a burning
vehicle was found in a public
roadway near the county hospital.
A young mail already badly burn-
ed wa- pulled out of it aud taken
to the hospital. At 3o’clock tfu*
next morning be iccovered eon
sciou-ne--. He was J. T. I)eck-
ard, a well-to-do young planter,
who lived near Saddler. ^ Tim
most severe barns were about the
left leg. He was brought to the
re?ddeiice of a relative in this
city, W. A. Young, at the corner
of Montgomery and Cherry -treet-
He grew worse rapidly this morn-
ing and at 8:30 o’clock he died.
In one of the last lucid interval-
he made a statement of a rather
peculiar nature, lie-aid: "When
I started out of Sherman for my
home I was alone in the buggy,
but I had not got far out when
two men bailed me and a.-ked me
to let them ride. I told them all
right. I don’t remember where
they got out, but I lo-t all cou
eciousness until I woke up in
great p mi at the hospital. Every -
thing i? so confu-ed in my mind I
can't describe the men. 1 hud
never seen them before.”
Mrs. Deckard, who had been a
con-tact watcher at her husband’s
bedside, fainted at his death and
for quite a while was in a precai-
ious condition. She has recover-
ed to a great extent this e>ening.
Maybe you can find a chance
to improve the Bl’CKSKIN
BREECHES. Ju-t because they
are the best paDts made doesn’t
preclude a possibility of improve-
ment. We don’t know how to
make them any bettor—don't
know how to get more goodness
into them. If you caa tell us we
will do it. Nothing too small
for consideration if it means im-
provement.
