Interesting Statistics on Cattle and Cat-
tle Values in the United States
rroflts on Fine Ftock as Afrainst Inferior
IllBStraed Imports and Exports
Notes and Fersonals
The recent report of the department of agri-
culture upon the number and value of farm ani
rials says the Cincinnati Price Current pre-
sents some interesting features and so it does
TIH re was an increase in number of horses In
the United States m January 1690 over 1SS9 of
C C4 of umle3 734D3 milch cows 654238 other
r tl including oxen 1 S0G607 sheep 173G993
sv w ldullhs a total increase of all animals
ot > > < Zi This looks like prosperity and so
would be if prices had been maintained but
the estimated values we find
v r < n we turn to
kinds
t
t there was a depreciation in all
ex
V 4
vt mules and sheep The aggregate
ittlon in 1SS5 was 250705005S
m 1S90 this had fallen to
1 T602S a decrease of b284030 notwith
t nUint the large increase in numbers That
11 < say if all the farm livestock in the country
fcj3 l > pen sold at the estimated values m Janua-
ry this vear it would not have brought as much
as would have done one year preceding by
ovrrSss0b0000 This does not include the ani
iia1 m towns and cities but only those on
farms and ranches Leaving out the mules and-
s ei p the depreciations of other animals was
i i v040 but the increase in value of mules
va S2 j4jG18 ani of sheep 510019332 a total
appreciation or S12 i69010 which deducted from
th aggregate depreciation leaves a net depre-
cation of SSS2S40 as givan above
The average depreciation according to the
estimates was Si03 per head for horses SIhi
lor cattle S1S0 for milch cows and SI07 for
su ne While these statistics look very unfav-
orable for the farming interest it does not fol-
low that livestock production is in an especially
bad way such figures are necessarily partially
estimated but are probably sufficiently ac-
curate for pbrposes of comparison Going back
to the year ISM we find that horses were then
S1040 per head lower than now mules were SS4G
lower hogs were two cents less cows were SI81
higher cattle S2 12 higher and sheep fourteen
cents higher since then prices have varied an-
nually but have generally been higher than
they are now although swine and sheep have in
several vcars been lower
The farmer does not sell ail of his livestock in
any one year and it is only that which goes into
commercial channels that is subject to the vari-
ations of the market and it is not improbable
that when he is ready to sell what was on hand
m January last he will be able to realize much
more than the estimated value at that time in
lact prices of cattle sheep and swine have al-
ready advanced materially which is in strong
contrast to the course of the market at
the corresponding time last year when
there was a steady depreciation in value
especially or hogs Horses and mules al-
most invariably appreciate in value when
the spring opens ana they are generally more
depressed in midwinter than any other season
so that if the comparison was made at the time
when the demand was most active it woul d at
least show much higher values if not less fluc-
tuations from year to year and the exhibit
would have a less depressing effect upon the
miiids of farmers themselves
The stock which a farmer retains for his own
use is worth as much to him one year as another
o that as rega ds that its selling value does
not affect him Considering all these things it
is evident that the statistics of values are if not
misleading at least more discouraging than the
circumstances warrant
HOW IT WORKS
Ihe Last Order of Secretary Noble Does Not
Apply to the Civilized Irlbes
Since the last order of Secretary Noble was
Issued declaring that all cattle must vacate the
Indian Territory by October 1 there has been
considerable uncertainty among cattlemen as to
its application some contending that it applied
to tattle in the five civilized ribes reservations
as well as to the cattle in the Strip and in the
country of the blanket Inaians while others
claim that it did not apply to the civilized tribes
Chief J M Perryman of the Creek nation
was in the city yesteiday and was interviewed
by a Gazette reporter on the subject Chief
Perryman is an educated intelligent Indian a
man of fine sense and a most interesting gentle-
man In answer to The Gazette reporters
question he said in substance as follows
I see by the papers that there I some doubt
on the point vou mention but there should be
none The Indians in the five civilized tribes
hold their land in fee simple and have a per-
fect right to lease it if they see proper to do so
and the government under the law has no
right to prevent it While the order you refer
to appears to cover the entire Indian Territory
it only applies to the Cherokee Strip and to the
reservations of the uncivilized tribes Tho
Chickasaws Creeks Cbocktaws Seminoles and
Cherokees control their own land and can lease
them to cattlemen if they wish to
To convince > ou that my proposition is cor-
rect I will show you a communication from In-
dian Commissioner Morgan on the subject which
wa directed to Indian Agent Bennett at Musko-
gee Caicf Perryman then handed to the reporter
the following document which clears away all
doubts on the subject
Washington D C April 10 1B9D
Agent Bennett Muskogee I T
Deu Sir The general letter of instruction to
agents in the Iadian Territory was sent to you
inadvertently They are not intended to inter-
fere wiih cattle grazing on the lands of the five
civilized tribes under their grazing laws but all
cattle must oe removed from the Cherokee Strip
under the presidents proclamation
T J Morgan Commissioner
This no doubt settles the matter and is proof
clear that the government does not propose to
interfere with cattle going to the country of tha >
fiic en iliz d tribes
hief Perryman said that cattle were coming
into the Creek Nation rapidly from Texa3vS d
that not less than 30000 head of Texas cattle
would be grazed there this summer

The following telegram which has appeared
the GlobeDemocrat is denounced by cattlenv
In Texas as a falsehood manufactured out of th
whole cloth and as a schema of boomers to in
fluence the president to order the cattlemen
from the Territory before October 1 in order
that their pet schemes may be carried out

tages and heed the lessons they may learn The
time for raising corn for direct consumption by
the people is nearly over in our locality and we
think that those who look well to their inte rests
will think twico before they give up to king cot-

to make indirectly productive of valuable swino
and dairy cattle Too much cotton has injured
us We have learned to depend upon it to the
total exclusion of everything else Is there not

Imports and Export
Inl6S9the United States imported sheep for
food purposes to the value of SI130281 against
1206328 the year before Of sheep for breed
Jng purposes we imported 93119 worth against
74034 worth the year before Our imports of
wool in the same time were worth H696277
against 14542244 in 1SSS manufactures of wool
of the value or 54080159 against 49984293 in
1SSS The total importations or sheep wool and
manufactures of wool last year then amounted
in value to 74001833 against 75806994 in
18SSIn
In the same time we exported sheep to the
value of 391185 against SJ434S3 in 18S4 mut-
ton 30642 against J1G953 wool 43433
against 3228 manufactures of wool 397233
against 39676s Our total exports of this kind
would then foot up 834493 against 662483 in
1888 That is to say in 1SSS our imports of
flock products were worth over eightyfive and
onehalf times as much as our exports
Will Not Move His Cattle
Capt Sug Robinson of Colorado City was
seen by a Gazette reporter yesterday and asked
about cattle in his section
They are in fine fix he said and im-
proving all the time We have had fine rains
recently and our range is getting better ever T
dayAre
Are you shipping any cattle asked the re
reporter
No I dont like to take any chances in the
Indian Territory this year and will hoi d my
cattle on my own pastures until they are ready
for market or until I can see my way clear on
some other pastures Things are too much
mixed now to suitme
Stock Sales
Young Kuhen report a fair business this
week they having made several good sales of
driving stock and mules Among them was a
sale to Mrs Josephine Ryan of a pair of fancy
driving horses at 600 a toppy driver to W T
Maddox foi 200 a gentle harness horse to
Father Guyot at S175 and fourteen head of
mules to an Arkansas party for 30 per headj f
They have a number of other trades on foot that
will probably be consumated this week
Notes and Personals
Col J T Shepherd of the St Louis stock-
yards is in tho city
Ten carloads of hogs passed through EI Paso a
few days ago for the City of Mexico
Ellis Harper sold a fine Tennesseebred jack
this week to John Long of ballas for 700
Coffin Bros sold day before yesterdav a fioe
jack to C E Taylor ot Grandview for 450
Col J S Godwin says it is nobodys business
where the cattle are going to they are going
and that is enough for anybody to know except
the man who owns the cattle and the man who
is to get them
Dick Forsythe the wellknown cattleman
was in the city yesterday Dick says he has a
herd of 1400 head of steer cattle on the trail
somewhere but he cant exactly locate them nor
tell where they are going
With the average breed of hogs there is very
little profit after the hog weighs 30 < pounds
The most pork is made with the least feed im-
mediately after the pig is weaned A pound gt
feed will produce more pork then than at any-
time in the pigs life As that p > g grows older
he costs more every day
It is worthy of careful consideration that
prime beeves seldom go begging anywhere It
is the half finished animal that is harshly dealt
with by the dealers and butchers It is equally
reasonable to expect the coasum
cheerfully pay for the unripe fru
cent the blue repulsive stuff so common
for meat
The most valuable race ever run was worth
J320000 to the winner It took place in NateUSzf
Miss in 183G aud was a match of 2300 bales 6f
cotton a side between J F Claybournes Susan
Yandell and Walker Thurstons Rouolph It
was play or pay and the cotton stalled was
worth a quarter of a million A few hours pre-
vious to the time set for the race Itodolph took
the big head and Susan Yandell had a walkover
for the prize
