Your timely article on Our Widening
Territory should arrest the attention Of
that sometimes worthy class engaged in
swapping corner lots on Main and Hous-
ton streets marking up quotations with
each transfer and by such trading seek-
ing to convey the impression of a wonder-
ful advance in values As more than
ono swallow is required to make
summer so something besides vacant
lots and tumbledown shanties is needed
to make a city In all Fort Worth
there is not to exceed a halfdozen
buildings suitable for the carrying
on of a jobbing business in modern stjle
now excepting the MartinBrown Co s
house are any being built From
Seventh street south on Houston there is
not a sign of improvement Main street
south of Sixth shows block after block of
shanties that would shame a sheep to be
found dead in Blacksmith shops and
peanut stands aro found occupying some
of the most desirable comers Many
lines of trade are unrepresented here be-
cause there are no suitable houses iu
which to couduct them Strangers come
to look at our widely advertised city
and get away with all possible speed
because of a lack of hotel comforts
These are uupalatable truths but truths
nevertheless and neither pronheey nor
tho gift of prophecy is needed to fore-
tell what the final result will be Other
places far more promising than Fort
Worth have gone all to pieces be-
cause of the same policy prevailing here

Manager Jack Fogarty of the Fort

day after a sojourn in St Louis in the
course of which he located the team that
will this year represent Fort Worth in the
ball field He is sntistied with the men
he has got and has no doubt they will
acquit themselves creditably
There is some trouble about getting

Worth people do not fear ho will escape

The schedule agreed upon at Galveston
is perfectly satisfactory to Fort Worth
The season opens on tho 129th with Dallas
at Fort Worth As Dallas has a date to
play the Chicagos on April 1 the game
which should be played in Fort Worth on
that day will be postponed About
April 20 the Fort Worth aud Dallas
teams have a lay off of four days one of
which is a Sunday and on that day tho
postponed game will be played giving
the Fort Worths an extra Sunday game
It is almost a certainty that Jack
Bellman who caught most of Dallas
games last year will be with the Fort
Worths He is a great allround ball-
player
It is not yet a settled thing that the
ball grounds cannot be used during tbe
time of the Spring Palace The man-
agers of the latter institution have been
of the opiuion that to have baseball so
near would hurt them but the baseball
people hope to be able to convince them

t Fobt Worth Tex March 7 lfe90
To the Gazette
There appears to be much interest
manifested just at this time upon the
question as to whether or not FortWorth
Bhnll have a new city hall No one will
certainly contend that we do not need
one The present city hall would proba-
bly bo a credit to many cities of Texas
but Fort Worth has outgrown such a
building and we find It entirely inade-
quate to our needs Will you kindly
put us down on the side of
progress We say let us have a city
hall one that will not only meet the
present demands but ono consistent
with the truthful declaration that we
are building for the future of Fort
Worth We have read the proceed-
ings of the city council upon this
question with great interest
and we are of the opinion that the
only mistake made so far by those favor-
ing the proposition is that they
nre satisfied with too cheap a building
Fort Worth is not a 75000 town This
fact is knowu in Texas although we
may have some difficulty in penetrating
the ignorauco of congresi with that be-
lief Fort Worth needs a government
building to cost 300000 and a city hall
to cost ir > 0000 FortWoitb is able to
build such a hall and such a building
would scarcely settle upon it foundation
before we would witness a vindication of
this assertion Rather than see Fort Worth
erect a 75000 city hall wo believe the
people themselves would besides being
taxed for that purpose contribute indi-
vidually to make it 150000 If it is
decided that 75000 is to be put into a
city hall and that Fort Worth is a 75000
town in order to disabuse the minds of
statesmen at Washington of the mistake
we will be two of 750 citizens of Fort
Worth to contribute 100 which iu addi-
tion to the 75000 of the city will erect
a city hall to coit 150000
In conclusion we would like to com-
mend the idea of our city council in
sending a select oomnrittoe to Dallas to
ascertain the defects aud imperfections to
be avoided in the erection of a oity hall
Very respectfally

What Will Fort Worth Do with Her Visitors
Nrxt Weik
There is going to be a big crowd of
people in Fort Worth next week
That iswhat everybody says and if
further proof is demanded one has only
to step around to the hotels to see how
the crowds stack up already A reporter
went around to the three leading hotels
last night at midnight and asked tho
clerks how they were fixed for rooms
One room left
Well we have a few beds left
We might be able to place a few more
people if necessary <
That is the way the hotels are fixed
