Young steer cattle are said to be in de-

For the first time in the memory of the
oldest inhabitant the Ruby range of the
IIumboldt mountains in Nevada is en-
tirely free from snow and the cattle
range in that section is not benefited by
the fact
Anything like a general understanding
among cattlemen would hasten the com-
ing of a better day for the industry and
a conference conduce to the interests of
all parties The meeting at Fort Worth
next January ought to be well attended

Hoc Raising and Bacon Sinking
The Wooten brotherswhose ranch is on
Bear creek in the county arc two of the
best known cattlemen in the county and
they have one of the best stocked ranches
to be found in this section Mr J W
Wootou was in the city yesterday and in
conversation with a Gazette reporter
stated that his cattle were in as good con-
dition as he could wish them to be He
has been purchasing yearlings during the
summer but has now about all he cares
to carry over to next spring
I have stopped buying yearlings
said he and have been buying hogs
How many have you purchased
asked the reporter
What do vou intend with
them ft
Feed them the surplus graiml have
and by so doing get better prices i crjaf
than 1 could in any other way TW l tAngo
Have you ever had sniy experience
in bacon
making Texas
For fifteen years I have been ranking5
besides
ndbaj
my own bacon some to sell to
my neighbors and I propose to continue
doiufr the same thinsr
What success hare you met with
The very best During the fifteen
years I have never lost a single piece of
meat and there is no doubt that the ba-
con venrod here in Texns is just as pood
f not better than that shipped here from
tho North When a farmer makes a ho
into bacon here he kills tho animal him-
self and does not use hoqs that have
died from difforent causes as is frequent-
ly the case at the lar e packing houses
up the country The homemade bacon
In Texas if cured by the old salting
down and smoking process is fnr supe-
rior to the briuecurcd stuff that
has been shipped into Texas
for year There is no trouble
to save bacon here no more than is en-
countered anywhere else and it isa won-
der to me that every farmer in Texas
does not make his own meat There is
more money in it than raising either cat-
tle or cotton
There is another thing continued
ilr Wooten and it is a great wonder to-
me that Fort Worth with all her enter-
prise has not thought of it It is this
A pork packery in this city would not
only stimulate the hograising industry
which would create a good grain market
but it would yield a good profit to those
who would establish it Texas
should furnish all her own
pork products and she could
do so if an effort was only made A
pork packery at this placn could get rid
of as much bacon as it could cure and
in the establishment of such an enterprise
the citv and state would be benefited
I am glad to know Tin Gazktti has
taken up the hog aud hommy cry It
isa good idea and is bound to win
The only trouble jut now is that the
demand for hogs is greater than the sup-
ply Every farmer is wanting hogs to
feed
Raislnjr Their Own Hogs
Special to the Gazette

people have recently been dealing in line
hogs several purchases of registered
stock having been made The farmers
generally are tailing in with Tin Ga-
zettes idea of hog meat made at home
Kansas Cattleman Murdered
Wichita Kax Sept 23 George
Latham a leading cattleman of this
state was found dead yesterday twenty
live miles northwest of here The body
was close to a hedge well covered with
grass He left here last Monday for
home Ho was known to have consid-
erable money and a magnificent watch
both of which are missing
Tho Inspection Lnr Unconstitutional
St Paii Mixx Sept 23 In tho
case of Henry E Barber arrested for
selling meat iu this county irom some
cattle not inspected on hoof and brought
before the United States court on a writ
of habeas corpus Judce Nelson this
morning rendered a decision deciding
that the law is unconstitutional as it in-
terferes with the commerce between
states The prisoner was ordered dis-
charged Notice of an appeal to the
supreme court was given
Cleaning Up
An observant traveler in the interest of
on improved car says that Northwestern
Texas and Panhandle cattlemen seem
determined to clean up and are shipping
about everything from veal calves up
He also states what most of us knew
previously that the Indian Territory will
be litejr 2jj emptied of cattle this fall
ThGjhfaHse herds placed in that terri
sS t spring were aged cattle and
stemTthere for the summer and to mature
If there is any country where the herds
are not being decimated at a fearful rate
it is too small to cut much figure It is
difficult to imagine such a crowding of
the market another year as the present
season shows under any circumstances
A Wretched System
A system is damnable that gives the
haudler of a day more net profit on a
beef animal than the original owner
re tf
eeiyed gross The producer has for
from three to four years endured toil and
exposure of the kind that shorten his
days and has taken business chances
that would appal merchants and men in
other hues the handler has simply
bought and sold with comparatively
little of toil and nothing of business
chances or anxiety in the premises The
one is years in realizing the other turns
his money over in a day Published
market figures furnish the facts as to
relative prices and profits received by the
two classes considered
Shipped from Wichita Falls
Special to the Gazette
Wichita Falls Tex Sept 23

of beef steers fat and fine The ship-
ment ot beef from here is heavy The
critters must go regardless of price
too many of them in the country fpr the
range Tho farmers are taking the
country by storm and the cattle
either have to go west or to Chicago
Cattle like wool cotton hides and
other products of Texas are shipped

The popular author of Cruel London
The Three Recruits and fully half a score
other wellknown novels is one of the hardest
working men in journalistic London Ke is
about medium height charming in manner
brilliant in conversation and an admirable
raconteur He was born in Andover Hants in
183 and was taken to Che > terfield in 1S41 where
his father established a printing and publishing
business and subsequently started a newspaper
Young Hatton was intended for the law but his
tastes tended toward literature His aspira-
tions however were viewed with disfavor so
much so that at ths age of sixteen he ran away
from home In various journalistic capacities
from junior reporter to proprietor lie was lo-
cated at Lincoln Cardiff Bristol Durham Wor-
cester in the Midlands and made his first ap-
pearance in London as editor of the Gentlemant
Magazine in which publication his novel
