Up to 6 oclock yesterday evening no
one la Fort Worth expected that a dls
tinuished party of gentlpmen were then
on their way to this city It had been
supposed for several days past that
Colonel S W Fordyce of the St Louis
Arkansas and Texas the famous cotton
belt route and a party of rail-
road officials would be in this
city some time this week but
when Colonel J P Smith received
a letter yesterday from Colonel Fordyce
dated St Louis it was thought the gen-
tleman had returned north While the
was therefore entirely unexpected
vi it last night
expected except by a very few visitors
were never more welcome At J oclock
the Missouri Pacific north bound pulled
up to the Union depot drawing the private
car of President S WFordyce which had
on board that gentleman and F K
Pendleton First VicePresident K C
Kerens Second VicePresident Colonel
Stephen B Klkins Judge H B Dennan
and Colonel George Coppell directors
and bondholders OT Lyon of Sherman
a heavy contractor for the road and Mr
Wm Cameron of Waco who Is also Inter
ested in Fort Worths prosperity The
shortness of notice precluded the possi-
bility of a large delegation of citizens
bein < at the depot to receive
the distinguished gentlemen but
Colonel J P Smith F J Tatum
W T Frlttlngham and a few other citizens
no carriages
zens were on hand There were
riages at hand and the party rode uptown
in true democratic style In a palace street
cor and were escorted to a leading hotel
While several of the party were preparing
for supper a Gazette man mingled with
the mighty magnates seeking for Informa-
tion Col Fordyce who Is always cour-
teous and willing to say what may be
said was first seen and asksd in regard to
the visit
We will be here until midday to-
morrow and can probably tell you more
by that time answered the Colonel
Where do you propose to begin your
line to Fort Worth
Ileally we dont know anything about
that yet we have decided uponnothing
Colonel S B Elkins who was the fam-
ous and mighty leader of the Blaine hosts
m 1S84 was seen a few minutes later
and expressed himself as greatly pleased
with Fort Worth and what he had seen
in Texas
Colonel is Blaine to be a candidate
for President again
Oh I am out of politics now I am
strictly devoting my attention to business
and railroads The Cotton Belt Line is a
magnificent road
Colonel Lyon of Sherman who is at
present engaged with Colonel Britton la
building the extension to Sherman was
quizzed for some time but had nothing
definite to impart
First VicePresident F K Pendleton
who is a son of our distinguished Min-
ister to Germany had but little to say
about railroad matters He had neard of
the rumors In regard to his fathers en-
tering President Clevelands cabinet In
Manning but rumors
place of Secretary
generally set on foot
of that kind were
men For himself
by newspaper
he was of opinion that Assist-
ant Secretary Fairchild would
be appointed to Secretary Mannings
position should the latter resign Mr
Pendleton expressed surprise at the
growing tendency to prohibition In the
south and considered it purely of New
England growth and therefore foreign
to the south The possibilities of Texas
he considered great and he was sur-
prised to see such fine buildings In Fort
Worth
Judge Denman attorney for this road
has before been In Texas Since his last
trip he has been pleased to note q most
unwonted degree of improvement He
accounts for this by virtue of the changes
for the better oi the country and its
wonderful resources as seen from
the extreme east to the west
Messrs Coppell and Kerens were
rather tired from their long journey and
retired early Mr William Cameron who
had accompanied the party from Waco
will remain in the city today and attend
to business in this city Waco should
be proud of possessing such a citizen
and his liberal snirit evinced by practical
deeds has had its effect m the Central
City The eentleraen arc here on business
railroad business and today will meet
Col Morgan Jones President of the Fort
Worth and Denver and other citiens In
regard to the matter in hand This morn-
ing it is proposed to show the gentlemen
over the city in carriages and It was
stated fiemioflicially last night that the
Commercial Club would entertain the
party at dinner tcday
Colonel Foidyce does not seek to hide
the fact that his company has considered
the question of building its line to this
city but there has been nothing settled
in regard to the question and therefore
the matter to a great extent remains with
Fort Worth and places along the hereto
lore suggested line The gentlemen will
remain in Fort Worth until 2 oclock this
afternoon
President Paddock of the Fort Worth
and Rio Grande says the grade to Gran
bury is nearly completed and a force of
men is now at work putting in the trest
ling over the smaller streams hauling
the timber on wagons to where needed
He also says there are 120 carloads of
steel in addition to what is on hand now
in transit between New Orleans and Fort
Worth The connection problem is still
unsettled
Mr George Hendticks who returned
yesterday from a trip duiing which he
visited Jacksboro reports that the Fort
Worth Western has obtained a fine line
to that city Magnificent building stone
and coal are he says near the city in
profusion and the rotd will pay from the
start Good rains have fallen and with
railroad connection Jacksboro and the
country round about will boom this year
A gentleman writes to Fort Worth from
Piano asking a committee from this city
and Grapevine to meet there and pull for
the St Louis Arkansas and Texas Col-
lin county and Piano will do what they
should the letter states Grapevine is
ready to do her part and the Greenville
committee has written to Fort Worth
saying they are ready

Rousing Meeting at Colorado
Special to the Gazette
Colorado Tex Feb 7 A rousing
railroad meeting of all our leading citi
zens and merchants was held today
Railroad matters were discussed at
length A committee composed of G W

road some four or live days ago are still
held in check and will likely be for some
sis or eight days more as time has to be
taken to condemn as no such thing as a
compromise can be effected on reasona
ble terms Mr W B Worsham has the
heaviest claim for damages as the line
will run over more of his land in and near
Henrietta than of any other person He
exacts 3000 where he is only
offered 500 and others who
own lots along the right of
way which it is said would have been
considered almost worthless if the rail-
road had not come are said to be asking
exorbitant prices And this is the specu-
lation that perhaps they expected to
make when they took such eager steps to
get the road to come to this point
The Texas Pool
Special to tho Gazette
Galveston Tex Feb 7 A good
many rumors are floating about here re-
garding alleged dissatisfaction existing
between the several roads comprising the
Texas Traffic Association Nothing
definite as to the truth of the
reports can be ascertained Kail
road officials are either reticent on
the subject or deny that the existence of
the pool is In any way threatened Ru-
mor credits the Gulf Colorado and anta
Fe folks as being dissatisfied with the
pooling agreement and it is thought that
the road in view of its early
connection with the Atchison
system is kicking over the
traces and getting ready to do business
entirely on its own hook As an evidence
of this programme on the part of the
Santa Fe company people who believe
the above rumors cite the fact of the re-
cent establishment of independent ticket
officps at this point and Fort Worth by
that company As an additional proof
they al o point to the fact
that round trip tickets between
Galveston and Houston were being sold
yeterday by both roads for a single fare
which looks very much like the old ri-
valry prior to the days of the pooling ar-
rangement A meeting of the pool di-
rectors is called for the 15th inst in this
city when it is certain these vexatious
rumors will be dispelled or verified

THE ATCHISON LINE IS DOING
Arkansas City is the best city in south-

our county the roads to be completed to
this city inside of twelve months The
Kansas and Arkansas Valley have made
The Santa Fe

and Galveston are pushing their line
from this point through the Indian Terri-
tory to Texas as fast as money and men
can do it The D M and A have their
a ent here ready to make us a proposi-

are
heding this way Now
it would stem to a man up a
tree that the gate city of the Arkan

outlets to all points of the compass dur-
ing the coming season The boom has
already commenced and we may expect
to see lively times here soon Arkansas

most glaring impudence and commenced

but this having no effect save to provoke
an impudent reply he caught the young
man by the collar yanked him uncere-
moniously to his feet and Hung him to
oue side The expression ou the young
mans face as he regained his equilibrium
would have been an inspiration to the
pencil of Cruikshank He cast a look of
mingled terror and astonishment upon
his assailant and then left tbe car in a
hurry followed by the laughter of the
passengers It was a desperate kind ot
rebuke but was justified by the circum-
stances
